FAIRFAX, VA—Cell phones and social networks can endanger corporate security when organizations fail to train employees, establish policies and enforce safe surfing. For example, a financial adviser could innocently open a Facebook page that inadvertently accesses and installs a malicious Facebook application on his tablet. Malware contained in the application could enable external access to his email account, and a hacker could grab confidential financial data via his professional corporate email account. Legal action is pursued.

Because today’s employees work in the office, on the road and from their homes, this scenario is plausible and corporate leaders must realize it can happen in their organizations if they leave cybersecurity supervision to chance. To help businesses ensure connections to corporate networks—and sensitive corporate data—remain secure, SIGNAL Media has gathered information from subject matter experts and put it in one place on their website.

"With so many people disclosing personal details and often unknowingly leaking confidential organizational information, social media has become the main platform for hackers to execute social media engineering attacks, phishing attacks and identity theft; social networking is now the main vehicle for spreading malware," says Dr. Scott A. Wells, co-founder and chief architect of the Social Media Security Professional (SMSP) certification powered by CompTIA, Ultimate Knowledge Institute. Dr. Wells is the instructor of the AFCEA Professional Development course “Social Media Management and Governance.”

Cybersecurity in the Work Place features facts about the threats social media pose, tips about how to stay cyber safe when travelling and videos about various aspects of the current BYOD trend. Take the quiz to find out how cyber savvy you are or tap into the knowledge offered in free white papers on the topic. Download IT policy templates that will help you put appropriate rules into place at your organization. Then, tune in to, or download the AFCEA Answers radio show where experts discuss how to safeguard the grid.

This compendium of cybersecurity information and resources is one part of AFCEA International’s support of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, activities encourage individuals and companies to remember to be safe and protect themselves online.

AFCEA International, established in 1946, is a non-profit organization serving its members by providing a forum for the ethical exchange of information, and dedicated to increasing knowledge through the exploration of issues relevant to its members in information technology, communications and electronics for the defense, homeland security and intelligence communities. www.afcea.org
