FAIRFAX, VAAFCEA International, an international association that serves its members by providing a forum for the ethical exchange of information, today announced the launch of a Federated Identity Campaign at its TechNet Land Forces East conference in Baltimore, MD.

“This is consistent with AFCEA’s dedication to increasing knowledge through the exploration of issues relevant to its members in information technology, communications, and electronics for the defense, homeland security and intelligence communities,” said Kent Schneider, AFCEA’s president and chief executive officer. “Our Federated Identity Campaign will provide an example of how industry can collaborate with the Federal Government at an operational level, leveraging the existing identity ecosystem and enhancing the nation’s overall Cyber security posture while benefiting from an economy of scale only achievable through the adoption and exercising a Federated Identity capability.”

The first phase of the Campaign has resulted in the implementation of a “bring your own credential” capability, where the AFCEA Secured Member Portal is now configured to read, authenticate, validate and provision for access members’ existing DoD Common Access Card (CAC), Personal Identification Verification (PIV), PIV-Interoperable, U.S. External Certificate Authority (ECA), Transportation Workers Identity Credential (TWIC) and Federation for Identity and Cross-Credentialing Systems (FiXs®™) certified credentials via a common authentication interface. AFCEA intends to expand the Federated Identity Campaign with additional functionality over the coming months with a goal of providing end-to-end services authenticated with its members’ federated credentials, from event planning through event attendance. Promising a path for rapid growth in the identity assurance infrastructure, this will significantly reduce costs and increase security at the perimeter and beyond and enable appropriate access control of facilities, installations, and information systems.

"This marks an important milestone for the adoption of federated identity authentication services,” Mr. Schneider added. “As certified federations roll out and are able to certify and accredit available federated applications and services, communities of interest across the nation will be able to leverage trusted federated identity credentials for both physical and logical access to resources, data and facilities used for protecting critical infrastructure assets, businesses and the public."

AFCEA International, established in 1946, is a non-profit membership association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, IT, intelligence, and global security.
