FAIRFAX, VA - The AFCEA Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the newly established Disabled War Veterans Scholarships of $2,500 each. The Scholarships are made possible by generous contributions from Microsoft employees with matching funds from Microsoft Corporation. The Scholarships are offered to active-duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations.

The Scholarships will be initially offered in fall 2008. Applicants must be currently enrolled and attending either a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the United States. Students may also be enrolled in an accredited distance-learning or online degree-granting program affiliated with a major, accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States. Candidates must be majoring in the following or C4I-related fields of electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer network systems; information systems security; computer information systems; information systems management; technology management; electronics engineering technology; computer science; physics; mathematics; or science or mathematics education. Majors directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or national security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA will also be eligible. Primary factors considered in the selection process are demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and financial need.

“AFCEA is proud to support disabled veterans and increase the number of students graduating in the hard science and technical fields with this new scholarship,” comments Kent Schneider, President and CEO. “We are honored to partner with Microsoft employees supported by Microsoft Corporation to provide these much-needed scholarships, and we encourage other corporations to fund educational opportunities for our veterans.”

The AFCEA Educational Foundation promotes excellence in education with scholarships, awards, grants and prizes, awarded annually to students studying the scientific and technical disciplines that support the information technology, communications, and intelligence needs of our military and national security agencies. In fiscal year 2008, AFCEA Chapters and the Educational Foundation together will award more than $1.5 million dollars in scholarships and awards.  For more information on the work of the AFCEA Educational Foundation, visit www.afcea.org/education/scholarships.
