L-3 GCS

L-3 GCS pioneered the concept of ruggedizing commercial satellite modems for outdoor use over a decade ago with the inception of its Outdoor Unit (ODU). The development of a ruggedized enclosure, use of solid state Environmental Control Units (ECU’s) and integration of certain ancillary functions such as the Antenna control unit (ACU), GPS, etc. into one enclosure, provided a significant advantage in SWaP as well as the elimination of bulky IFL cables normally associated with transportable VSAT terminals. With the L-3 GCS Hawkeye™, Cheetah™, and Panther™ terminals, all that is required for full M&C and data is a single CAT5 cable.

The next generation L-3 GCS Outdoor Unit is the “SLICE” ODU. This unit expands on L-3 GCS’ original concept by placing the modem in a removable module or “slice” such that multiple modems can be supported while a significant portion of the hardware remains common. This allows GCS to support networks beyond those requiring iDirect modems, the only modem supported by our classic ODU.

GCS’ preliminary development focused on the Viasat Linkway S2 modem to allow us to participate in the Army NIE 12.2 exercise at Fort Bliss Texas last year. The Slice ODU Linkway S2 embedment was certified by Viasat and accepted into the NIE 12.2 exercise. The results of the Army’s testing at that exercise were extremely positive and the Hawkeye™ III-Lite terminals with slice ODU were deemed suitable for fielding.

In addition to the Linkway S2 modem, L-3 engineers are also working to embed the iDirect e800, Hughes HX-280, and L-3 Linkabit MPM-1000 NetCentric modems. Also, as the sole military launch partner for Inmarsat’s Global Xpress service, L-3 GCS will offer a Global Xpress version as well.

The GCS Slice ODU will add numerous enhancements beyond the support of additional modems. Among these enhancements is a color graphic display and keypad to allow local control of the terminal. Advanced antenna controllers and a beacon receiver / spectrum analyzer will also be options. A DSL modem will allow data and full M&C over a single copper pair over several kilometers.

Remote control of all GCS VSAT terminals will be based on its ViewSAT™ software. This proprietary GUI is loaded on approximately 8000 fielded terminals to date, and has been refined based on our extensive experience and countless hours of field use. The ViewSAT™ application will now be hosted on an enhanced processor residing in the Slice ODU. This enhanced processor will contain a web server such that any device containing a web browser function will be able to monitor and control the terminal. A Windows based PC can still be used but is no longer required.

With the inclusion of the enhanced processor, L-3 GCS will also support SNMP to allow it’s terminals to function in a global NMS environment.

The Slice ODU will continue the VSAT terminal evolution L-3 GCS began a decade ago and will allow theL-3 GCS Hawkeye™ VSAT product family to function on virtually all major satellite networks.

Rohde & Schwarz presents the next-generation software defined tactical radio

Flexible, secure, SCA based: The new R&S®SDTR software defined tactical radio enables high data rate, jam-resistant communications in network centric operations.

Rohde & Schwarz introduces the R&S®SDTR, the first in a new generation of software defined radios, together with a family of network capable waveforms. This tactical radio for vehicular and semi-mobile platforms delivers 50 W of output power without external amplifiers and covers the 30 MHz to 512 MHz range. It meets the military‘s special requirements on shock resistance, size, weight and ventilation without the need for extra mechanical shock absorbers. Thanks to integrated high-performance filters, antennas can be spaced as close as one meter apart and the radio lines will not interfere with each other. The R&S®SDTR tactical radio, with the R&S®HDR waveforms, is fully IP capable and can be easily and seamlessly integrated into existing IP networks.

The R&S®SDTR is an open platform based on the software communications architecture (SCA) standard. SCA based waveforms and other manufacturers‘ waveforms can be ported to the radio, paving the way for interoperability with allied armed forces. The R&S®SDTR is an investment for the future. It has the capability to handle future international standardized waveforms with datarates of up to several Mbit/s.

Herbert Rewitzer, Head of the Radiocommunications Systems Division at Rohde & Schwarz, says: „We developed the R&S®SDTR as an open, flexible platform so that our customers can adapt their communications systems to their tasks and not the other way around – a key factor in the success of missions.“

Rohde & Schwarz has developed a family of network capable, high data rate waveforms to handle diverse mission requirements. The R&S®HDR waveforms transmit data and up to two voice channels in parallel, at high speed and with different priorities. Users can select the waveform that best matches their requirements on range, data rate and jamming immunity. The R&S®HDR waveform family enables mobile, IP based tactical radiocommunications, the prerequisite for future networked operations. Tresys Technology Announces Release of XD Air® Version 4.2 Assured Air Gap Transfer Solution

Latest product version implements customer-driven support features for evolving requirements

Tresys announces that the company has made Tresys XD Air version 4.2 generally available. All recent enhancements to the product are the direct result of requests and requirements made to Tresys by new and existing customers in the Department of Defense (DoD), Intelligence, and Critical Infrastructure communities. The company has also recently added the XD Air to GSA Schedule 70 for easier procurement.

XD Air, a kiosk-based appliance, cleanses files on portable media to effectively mitigate the potential risk of introducing malicious content into an operating environment while shielding the inspection platform from modification. Recent global events such as Buckshot Yankee, Stuxnet, and the WikiLeaks exfiltration have highlighted the vulnerabilities that high-security operating environments face, causing organizations to seek threat vector mitigation capabilities to reduce their exposure.

XD Air enforces the only operating policy that can protect an environment from Zero-Day malware exploits—permitting only known good content to enter a facility, network, or system. By comparison, traditional anti-virus and anti-malware generally identify known bad, which leaves the system vulnerable to exploits that have never before been seen. XD Air is also the only U.S. Cyber Command-approved tool for the transfer of classified data using portable media. [U.S. DoD personnel may request specific guidance document (Ref: USCYBERCOM CTO 10-084) through official channels.]

Product enhancements include migration to Assured File Transfer (AFT) 1.3 which enables support for Microsoft Office® 2010 file types as well as UTF-8 (Unicode); ability to process file sizes up to 1 GB; support for additional media types including legacy SCADA devices, SD cards, and compact flash; ability to process USB hard disks up to 250 GB in size as well as floppy disks; and the capability to sign destination media for secure distribution to another site using XD Air. A list of additional enhancements can be found at www.tresys.com/xd-air.php.

XD Air version 4.2 is now generally available for shipping. XD Air and required software renewal maintenance can be procured via GSA Schedule GS-35F-0074S, SIN 132-8, Part # XD-A (XD Air product) and SIN 132-12, Part # XD-A_M (XD Air maintenance). For immediate orders or procurement support, please call 202-296-5505 or email sales@winvale.com.

IPGate solutions are designed to simplify the Department of Defense (DoD) “everything over IP” effort by easing the migration of legacy serial- and circuit-based network applications to packet-based IP networks. These appliances use the latest emulation technology to encapsulate the TDM traffic into packets as it enters the network and restoring them at the exit point. This technology provides a single device platform to develop a unified communications’ solution.

To satisfy the monitoring and testing requirements of legacy interfaces, all IPGate products offer both circuit monitoring and testing along with detailed statistics for the IP portion of the network.

The IPGate products also set themselves apart by offering any-to-any connectivity anywhere on the network where there is an IPGate appliance.

For additional information on any IPGate or other Cornet Technology, Inc. offerings visit our website at www.cornet.com, or call us at 703-658-3400.
