Balancing oversight and innovation

With all the headlines about honest mistakes of late, it bears remembering that not all mistakes are bad, writes Christopher Dorobek in his newest Incoming column, "Government Needs to Find Balance in Oversight". Noting the government trend toward accountability, Dorobek questions whether accountability itself should be the mission of government. Too much oversight, he cautions, may stifle the very thing agencies need most to best accomplish their missions.

Freedom Alliance

"The price of liberty is eternal vigilance." So reads the slogan of Freedom Alliance which directs all the organization's efforts. The charitable and educational foundation was founded by Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC (Ret.), who said from the beginning that the goal would be to work to "keep America strong, keep America prosperous and keep America free." The mission of Freedom Alliance is to advance the American heritage of freedom by honoring and encouraging military service, defending the sovereignty of the United States and promoting a strong national defense.

Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Receives Navy Contract

The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Incorporated is being awarded a $146 million cost-plus-incentive-fee contract from the U.S. Navy for a Trident II (D5) MK6 Life Extension Guidance System. Strategic Systems Programs is the contracting activity.

Verizon Business to Provide Voice, Data Services to Federal Agencies in Mid-Atlantic Region

Verizon Business will provide a range of local voice and data services to federal agencies in five mid-Atlantic states under a new agreement, valued at as much as $121 million, with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). Under the contract, the GSA and other federal agencies in the mid-Atlantic region, which covers Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia, can immediately buy local voice and data services, including Centrex, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services, network-based voice messaging, private line data services and related managed and professional services.

Boeing Receives STOC II Training Contract From Army

The Boeing Company's Integrated Defense Systems' Training Systems and Services business unit will manage the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation's Omnibus Contract II (STOC II), which the company has been awarded.

Air Force Awards Northrop Grumman $276 Million Contract for Global Hawk Unmanned Aircraft Sustainment

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract from the U.S. Air Force for $276 million for operations and maintenance support of the RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. Northrop Grumman will provide such services as ongoing engineering, data and configuration management, global supply chain management, technical data and field services, and maintenance.

VSE Receives Award for Army Support Services

VSE Corporation's Federal Group Communications & Engineering and Field Support Services divisions were awarded a task order for U.S. Army Support Services. The task order could be worth up to $389 million if the task order option period is exercised. Under the order, VSE will provide technical support services, including program management, integrated logistics, repair, maintenance and sustainment of route and area clearance countermine/counter-improvised explosive device vehicular systems, on behalf of the U.S. Army Program Executive Office Combat Support and Combat Service Support systems, Product Manager for Assured Mobility Systems.

Arizona State University's Flexible Display Center Awarded Army Contract

The U.S. Army has committed to sponsoring an additional five years of research and development at Arizona State University's Flexible Display Center. The five-year renewal is for $50 million. The Flexible Display Center is a collaboration among government, industry and academia designed to advance the development of full-color flexible display technology.

General Dynamics Awarded Enterprise IT Contract by Marine Corps

General Dynamics Information Technology has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command to support the Marine Corps Enterprise IT Services (MCEITS) program. The single award, indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract is valued at $95 million if all options are exercised. Through the contract, General Dynamics will design, build and integrate the first MCEITS Enterprise IT Center, which provides application hosting capabilities, enterprise shared services, access to enterprise-wide information, collaboration and information sharing across business and warfighter domains.

BAE Receives $39.4 Million in Follow-on Orders

BAE Systems has received 17 orders valued at $39.4 million from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for production of seven types of Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment (MOLLE) system sets, which enable soldiers to carry equipment and supplies critical to their mission.
