U.S. Navy Awards Anti-Submarine Surveillance Contract

The Applied Physical Sciences Corp., Groton, Conn., is being awarded a potential $21,213,511 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development of configurable technology to provide anti-submarine warfare surveillance over large, operationally relevant, deep ocean areas. This effort will include system architecture and design, sensors and processing, communications mobility, and energy requirements. This contract was competitively procured via a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency broad agency announcement.The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, San Diego, Calif., is the contracting activity.

DARPA Awards Structural Logic Contract

HRL Laboratories L.L.C., Malibu, Calif., is being awarded a $10,150,974 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract under the Structural Logic program, which seeks revolutionary structural designs that make up the basis for modern military platforms and systems by passively adapting to varying loads and simultaneously exhibiting high stiffness and high damping over a wide dynamic range. The goal of the Structural Logic Phase II is to demonstrate that this radically new approach to structural design can be applied to relevant and real world tactical systems. During Phase I of the program a wide range of relevant tactical applications were evaluated for the Structural Logic concepts and technologies including: space, armor, aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and civil engineering structural systems. The government has selected a hydrodynamic application, in particular a high-speed boat for the Phase II demonstration. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity. 

DARPA Aims to Maintain U.S. Microelectronics Edge

Microelectronics Advanced Research Corp., Durham, N.C., is being awarded a $13,477,331 other transaction. The goal of the Semiconductor Technology Advanced Research Network is to create/continue a nationwide network of multi-university research centers that will keep the Department of Defense and U.S. semiconductor and defense systems firms at the forefront of the global microelectronics revolution. These centers will be focused on discovering solutions to the intractable problems that are forecast to lie in the future of integrated circuit progress and to lay the foundations for microsystems innovations once the improvements associated with Moore’s Law are exhausted. Georgia Tech to Research Big Data Solutions

A research team at the Georgia Institute of Technology has received a $2.7 million award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop technology intended to help address the challenges of big data—data sets that are both massive and complex. The contract is part of DARPA’s XDATA program, a four-year research effort to develop new computational techniques and open-source software tools for processing and analyzing data, motivated by defense needs. Georgia Tech has been selected by DARPA to perform research in the area of scalable analytics and data-processing technology. The Georgia Tech team will focus on producing novel machine-learning approaches capable of analyzing very large-scale data. In addition, team members will pursue development of distributed computing methods that can process data-analytics algorithms very rapidly by simultaneously utilizing a variety of systems, including supercomputers, parallel-processing environments and networked distributed computing systems. 

University Researches Language Translation for DARPA

University of Pennsylvania, Linguistic Data Consortium, Philadelphia, is being awarded an $8,122,014 modification to a cost contract. Option 1 is being exercised to continue research under the Broad Operational Language Translation program to address the compelling need to perform multi-turn communication with non-English speaking local populations of foreign countries and allies. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Arlington, Va is the contracting activity. 

Raytheon Awarded Text Filtering and Exploration Contract

Raytheon BBN Technologies Corp., Cambridge, Mass., is being awarded a $16,487,403 cost plus fixed fee contract for alert dissemination and event profiles from text as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Deep Exploration and Filtering of Text Program. The contracting activity is the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, N.Y. 

DARPA's Rotary Wing Multifunction Sensor Program Moves Forward

Northrop Grumman, Linthicum Heights, Maryland, is being awarded a $33,158,857 modification to a cost plus fixed fee contract. The Advanced Rotary Wing Multifunction Sensor (ARMS), Multifunction RF program Phase II, will be the detailed design/build phase which aims for a tower demonstration of a controlled flight into terrain sensor and a multifunction sensor suite, and support of integration of radar data into the synthetic vision avionics backbone. This phase seeks to provide the detailed design of the multiple sub-array aperture based on the concepts developed in Phase 1. This phase will be accomplished by using the extensive set of existing Northrop Grumman RF design and aperture design infrastructure, as has been previously applied in the development of active electronically scanned array products for previous programs. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity.

DARPA Awards Anti-Submarine Unmanned Vessel Contract

Science Applications International Corporation, McLean, Virginia, is being awarded a $58,485,318 cost-plus-fixed-fee and cost-plus-incentive-fee contract to perform Phases 2 through 4 of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) Program. The contractor will design, construct, and demonstrate a prototype ACTUV vessel. The contractor proposed a trimaran platform: key features and innovations for the vessel, sensors, autonomy and software. This design reflects the results of extensive trade studies conducted by Science Applications International in Phase 1, which validated the suitability of a trimaran platform. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity.

Boston Dynamics to Build Humanoid Robots for DARPA

Boston Dynamics Incorporated, Waltham, Massachusetts, is being awarded a $10,882,438 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. The contractor will develop and build a set of identical humanoid robot systems for use by performers in both phases of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Robotics Challenge Program. This effort will develop robotic platforms consisting of two legs, a torso, on board computing, two arms with hands, and a sensor head. The robots to be delivered to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency will be distributed to the top software development teams based on the results of the Virtual Disaster Challenge of the Robotics Challenge program. The contractor will also provide in-the-field support and as-required maintenance to the delivered systems. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity.

DARPA Modifies Simulation Contract

Intific Incorporated, Hampton, Virginia, is being awarded an $8,334,720 modification to a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. In-scope modification was issued under the Insight Program to continue the development of the virtual environment, a high-fidelity simulation of the physical test bed and Exploitation and Resource Management System operation together in a closed loop and demonstrate its capability for real-time simulation. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the contracting activity.
