General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Incorporated recently announced that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded the company a contract for development of the complete Demonstrator Laser Weapon System (DLWS) for the agency's High Energy Liquid Laser Defense System (HELLADS) program. The contract award follows the successful development and test of the company's HELLADS weapon class unit cell under a previous contract.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Incorporated, Poway, California, is being awarded nearly $40 million for the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System program, a 150-kilowatt laser designed for flight traceable performance, ready to integrate into a field test system for ground demonstration. The system will include battery and thermal management systems to support representative airborne, seaborne, and ground-based scenarios, which present multiple target prosecutions in sequence. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity.

The Defense Department's FY 2012 budget proposal features $2.3 billion for improved cyber capabilities, according to figures released this afternoon. Key elements of that funding include $0.5 billion for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to invest in cyber technologies. Funding also will be provided to the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) for cyber identity, monitoring and enforcement.

BAE Systems National Security Solutions, Burlington, Massachusetts, is being awarded an $8 million contract for the Behavioral Learning for Adaptive Electronic Warfare (BLADE) program, to develop counter adaptive wireless communication threats in tactical environments and in tactically relevant time scales. The BLADE program will achieve this objective by developing novel algorithms and techniques that will enable Department of Defense electronic warfare systems to automatically learn to jam new radio frequency threats in the field.

Raytheon Company recently received a $21 million contract for the Triple Target Terminator (T3) program, which will develop a high-speed, long-range missile that can engage air, cruise missile, and air defense targets. T3 would be carried internally on stealth aircraft or externally on fighters, bombers and unmanned aircraft. The University of Notre Dame and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are each being awarded cost reimbursement contracts for the NV Logic program, which will enable a completely new computing paradigm based on nano-magnetic devices that will achieve 100 times better computing performance relative to that attainable with current technology.
