General Dynamics Continues Abrams Tank Upgrades

The U.S. Army TACOM Lifecycle Management Command has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems $72.7 million under an existing contract to upgrade 12 M1A1 Abrams tanks to the M1A2 Systems Enhancement Package (SEP) V2 configuration. The M1A2 SEP V2 includes improved color displays, day and night thermal sights, commander remote operated weapon station (CROWS II), a Thermal Management System (TMS) and a tank-infantry phone. The original multi-year contract was awarded in February 2008, which authorized the upgrade of 435 M1A1 tanks that have been in the Army’s inventory for more than 20 years. General Dynamics is continuing the conversion of the tanks in the Army’s active component to the M1A2 SEP V2 configuration.

Researchers Develop One-of-a-Kind Nanocomputer

Scientists and engineers from MITRE Corporation and Harvard University published a paper this week revealing the development of what they call the most dense nanoelectronic system ever built. The ultra-small, ultra-low-power processor could be used for tiny robotics, unmanned vehicles and a broad range of commercial applications, including medical sensors.

QinetiQ Awarded Naval Research Lab Contract

QinetiQ North America, Reston, Va., has announced that it was awarded a three-year, potential $12 million strategic contract for ocean modeling, remote sensing, and physical oceanography programs to support the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. One of the primary projects included in this contract is to continue developing the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). HYCOM is a new global, high-resolution ocean prediction system that improves situational awareness and the ability to predict future ocean environments. Another key project is the HYCOM 20-Year Reanalysis Project, which will generate full-resolution historical ocean records from 1992 to the present. Additional projects include predicting Arctic ice parameters, improving sea surface temperature measurements from space, running high-resolution models for expeditionary warfare exercises and satellite calibration.

BAH to Support Naval Enterprise Networks Office

Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., McLean, Va., is being awarded $12,502,113 for task order NS27 under a previously awarded cost-plus-fixed-fee, six-month bridge contract (N00178-04-D-4024) for program management office support for the Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems, Naval Enterprise Networks (NEN) office. Services being acquired are program management, financial management and administrative services in support of the NEN program office. The Space and Naval Warfare System Command, San Diego, Calif., awarded the contract on behalf of its organizational partner, Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems, and is the contracting activity (N00039-14-C-0036).

Lab Seeks to Protect Pilots from Photonic and Electromagnetic Attacks

Azimuth Corp., Dayton, Ohio, has been awarded a $23,734,700 cost-reimbursable, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity modification (P00006) to an existing contract (FA8650-09-D-5434) to advance research and development efforts for the Hardened Materials Research and Survivability Studies Program. General Dynamics Information Technology Inc., Dayton, Ohio, has been awarded a $23,734,700 cost-reimbursable, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity modification (P00006) to an existing contract (FA8650-09-D-5430). The modifications are to transition and advance the state-of-the-art in materials technologies, hardening concepts, and survivability applications associated with the protection and sustainability of Air Force aircrews and systems from a host of threats associated with photonic light and electromagnetic energy sources. Key technical areas in the program include optical materials and processing, hardening materials and processing, electro-optic/infrared sensor protection, warfighter protection, structural protection, optical technology, computational and theoretical studies on functional materials, proactive threat defeat, and high-energy laser source materials. Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the contracting activity.

PLEXSYS Supports AWACS Simulation

PLEXSYS Interface Products Inc., Camas, Wash., has been awarded an $8,254,297 sole-source, firm-fixed-price, follow-on contract for commercial training simulation services (CTSS) on contractor-owned equipment for the Airborne Warning and Control (AWACS) Mission Training Center (MTC) follow-on program. The purpose of this acquisition is to deliver continued AWACS MTC Block 30/35 CTSS on contractor-owned equipment until the trainers are replaced by Block 40/45 Mission Crew Training Systems. Block 30/35 simulation training services consist of: availability of effective high-fidelity AWACS E-3 Block 30/35 training capability; concurrency with ramp aircraft; and compliance with distributed mission operations standards. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Agile Combat Support, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio is the contracting activity (FA8621-14-C-6310).

Irish Navy Purchases Hand-Held Sonar System

The Irish Naval Service has acquired a NAVIGATOR Diver Held Sonar and Navigation System manufactured by Shark Marine Technologies Inc., of Ontario, Canada. The Irish Naval Service is the state’s principal seagoing agency. The Naval Service Diving Section (NSDS) is the primary state diving team, carrying out varied tasks for a number of state agencies. Members of the NSDS used the NAVIGATOR system whilst training with the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet diving unit. The NAVIGATOR system is equipped with forward-looking multi-beam sonar to assist diving operations, including search and recovery operations and underwater security.

Iraq, Thailand Procure Inertial Navigation Systems

Northrop Grumman Guidance and Electronics Company Inc., Woodland Hills, Calif., has been awarded a $200 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to perform acquisition and sustainment for the Embedded Global Positioning System Inertial Navigation System (EGI). The acquisition and sustainment will consist of platform integration, modernization, diminishing manufacturing sources, flight test support, technical support following integration efforts, training, engineering support/studies, contractor depot repair, spares, and data for the standard EGI. The first order placed against this IDIQ contract will obligate $2,027,004 of foreign military sales (FMS) funding in support of unclassified Iraq EGI sales and $722,192 of FMS funding in support of unclassified Thailand EGI sales. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Robins Air Force Base, Ga., is the contracting activity (FA8540-14-D-0001).

Cortana to Research and Develop Sensor Technology

Cortana Corp., Falls Church, Va., is being awarded a $7,760,214 modification to a previously awarded cost-plus-fixed-fee contract (N00421-09-C-0028) to exercise an option for the research and development of sensors and systems in support of the Advanced Sensor Application Program and the Remote Environmental Sensor Program. Sensors and systems support a variety of naval aviation missions, including air-under-sea warfare, defense suppression, electronic attack, naval warfare and amphibious, strike and anti-surface warfare. The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting activity.
