Cyber Ops

Wednesdays from February 27th through May 22, 2013.

This course qualifies for Continuing Education Units.
Note: - For real-time participation the class will be hosted from 7:30p.m-9:30p.m. EDT/EST. Students who need to participate in the course at times other than these times, may listen to the full transcript (video, audio and participants commentaries). The 12-18 MB transcript of the presentation will be available from a protected AFCEA website location. Students will annotate the Power Point (original version) slides with any questions, and Dr. Strassmann will respond. Students will be allowed to follow the course synchronously if their time schedule allows it. They can mix synchronous and asynchronous attendance as a matter of choice. Each session will include a slide presentation, audio commentary and an interactive video-enabled on-line "chat" for questions. After class a recorded transcript will be available for each session. Members of the class will prepare a brief commentary on each weekly topic plus a term paper. AFCEA PDC will run a test of the online classroom for all members of the class the week prior to the start of class. - After class a recorded transcript will be available for each session.

Course Description:

This course provides students with a technical overview of current Cyber Operations issues in DoD. The course content deals with topics that are of primary interest to the Department of Defense personnel and its contractors who will be carrying much of the responsibility for actual implementation of cyber-related systems. The course leads to an understanding of how the latest information technologies apply to cyber operations. Emphasis will be placed on the most recent technological developments, such as cloud computing, defensive countermeasures, zero-day vulnerabilities, cyber threats and the available technological means to protect the DoD. It will not cover any material that can be found in existing textbooks but will concentrate on the most recent developments, including reviews of major cyber attacks as they occur.

This course can be seen as a career-enhancement for personnel seeking added skills to qualify for positions that are now opening in cyber operations.

Class #3: Attacks on Cyber Networks;

Class #4: Security of Cyber Operation;

Class #5: Organization of DoD Networks for defense;

Class #6: Legacy Applications in Cyber Operations;

Class #7: Desktop Virtualization for Cyber Operations;

Class #8: Data Center Clouds in Cyber Operations;

Class #9: Management of Data in Cyber Operations;

Class #10: Software requirements for Cyber Operations;

Class #11: Storage Reliability;

Class #12: Open Source Software;

Class #13: Social Networks in Cyber Operations.

There will be more than 70 slides shown in every class. This material will be provided a week ahead of the class so that students can be prepared to ask questions about topics that will be covered. Students will be also able to annotate the presentation material with a real-time on-line “chat” commentary.

Course Prerequisite: Students must have at least four years of prior direct experience working with information technologies. Students will have to produce an original discussion paper about the topics covered in each class and in the required readings. All papers will be graded. If a student cannot attend a class they will receive a password for a record of each presentation as well as a copy of the audio of classroom discussions.

Additional Info: Every student’s desktop must be equipped with a camera. During class discussion a student’s personal picture will appear on the screen. Students will see on their desktops the instructor’s applications (usually power point slides), white board and space for write-in comments. When a student has a question they can click on their name to prompt the instructor for an responses.

Course Logistics

Courses will run on Wednesday evening from 7:30PM to 9:30PM EST.

Students will receive a personal invitation for each class, including web page address and access password.

Paul A. Strassmann, PhD, is Distinguished Professor at the George Mason University. He the former Director of Defense Information, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Acting CIO of NASA and is the retired VP and CIO of the Xerox Corporation.
