AFCEA Chapter eCYBERMISSION 2013-2014

A partnership opportunity between AFCEA and NSTA

(National Science Teachers Association)


Program Summary

eCYBERMISSION (eCM) is a free, web-based STEM competition for students in grades 6-9.  eCM challenges students to think about real-world applications of STEM by working in teams to identify a problem in their community and use the scientific method, scientific inquiry or engineering design process to find a solution.  Students compete for state, regional and national awards, with potential winnings of up to $8,000 (maturity value) in U.S. Savings Bonds.

Sponsors

  • U.S. Army – part of the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP): Army-sponsored research, education competitions, internships and practical experiences designed to engage and guide students and teachers in STEM education

Program Themes

Student teams must choose one of the following 7 Mission Challenges:

  • Alternative Sources of Energy
  • Environment
  • Food, Health and Fitness
  • Forces & Motion
  • National Security & Safety
  • Robotics
  • Technology

Participants

  • Students: Grades 6-9
  • Team Advisors: Teachers, coaches, counselors or leaders in youth organizations
  • Ambassadors*: Civilian or military volunteers who promote eCM in their community
  • CyberGuides*: Civilian or military volunteers who provide online assistance to eCM teams and promote the program in their local community
  • Virtual Judges: Independently score Mission Folders submitted by the student teams

* Requires active DoD security clearance or Federal Background check

Goal

With the goal of increasing eCYBERMISSION (eCM) student registrations and submissions and eCYBERMISSION volunteer (Ambassadors, CyberGuides, Team Advisors, and Virtual Judges) registrations and participation, NSTA and AFCEA will partner in order to increase outreach to AFCEA Chapters.

 

Chapter Participation

AFCEA Chapters will be compensated for eCYBERMISSION registrants and participants during the
2013-2014 program year.  Registrants MUST select the following registration code in the drop-down menu during initial registration: AFCEA: Referred by AFCEA Chapter.  Registrants will then choose their specific AFCEA chapter from a subsequent drop-down menu.  AFCEA will not get credited for any registrant that fails to use this registration code.  NSTA will track chapter performance using this data.

Special STEM Teacher Prizes

  • Regional Winners:

Teachers of winning teams at Regionals will receive $250 AFCEA STEM Teaching Tool Grants.

  • National Winners:

                  Teachers of winning teams at Nationals will receive $1,000 AFCEA STEM Teaching Tool Grants.

                  NOTE:  Teachers of winning teams at Nationals will receive the single $1,000 STEM Grant.
