Military Museum (Askeri Müze ve kültür sitesi) Valikonagi Caddesi, Harbye Istanbul 34298 Turkey Tel. + 90 212 233 2720 The Military Museum is 1km north of Taksim Square. The old Harbiye building, used as a Military Museum and Cultural Center today, was first built as a War College in 1841. The building was completely burned during a fire in 1853. It was reconstructed and was used as a War College until 1936. Many commanders and officers, including Atatürk, were educated there. After the transfer of the War College to Ankara in 1936, the building was assigned to different army forces. In 1966 the building was restored and transformed into a modern Military Museum without harming its historical and architectural character. The Museum holds striking historical treasures such as the chain which the Byzantines stretched across the mouth of the Golden Horn to keep out the Sultan's navy in 1453. The Military Museum is also where you can hear the Mehter, the world's oldest military band, play each afternoon.
Ataturk International Airport is approximately 28 km from downtown Istanbul (30 minutes). A taxi fare is approximately 20 Euros.
