The Sixth NATO CIS Symposium was organised under the auspices of the NATO Consultation, Command and Control (C3) Board (NC3B) on 18 October 2006 in Sofia, Bulgaria on the theme “Interoperability Challenges in Coalition Operations”.

The Partnership Work Plan (PWP) described many NATO activities for and with Partners. The C3 symposium as part of the PWP was an excellent way for NATO and Partners to discuss current CIS topics, to expose initiatives and their status, and to identify areas of cooperation, needs and concern. The Symposium was an event also open to Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative countries.

Practical issues of interest for the NATO nations as well as for Partner nations were addressed, such as:

Operational CIS lessons learned

  • NRF planning process
  • CIS lessons from operational deployments
  • How to improve from lessons learned

Dynamic deployment of networks and systems

  • Use of architectures to plan coalition operations
  • Interoperability of planning tools
  • Dynamic testing capabilities

Information exchange or information sharing

  • Information sharing in coalition operations
  • Information management
