LandWarNet 2008: Providing and Enabling Joint Generating/Operating Force Network Capabilities

Track One: The Network Service Center (NSC) - Vertically and Horizontally Integrating a Network of Networks

The Network Service Center concept is a warfighting capability formed by the combination of network assets that are synchronized globally.  The NSC integrates NetOps, Transport and Enterprise Services capabilities and supports generating, Joint and expeditionary forces by globally integrating and pre-conditioning broad-based enterprise capabilities to facilitate a network-enabled Battle Command.  The future force will rely on a network-enabled Battle Command to achieve full spectrum dominance in confronting and controlling dynamic combinations of conventional and unconventional threats.  Network-enabled Battle Command is one of the seven key operational concepts the future force will employ to facilitate the situational understanding needed for the self-synchronization and effective application of Joint and Army combat capabilities in any form of operation.  Leveraging the NSC concept ensures that capabilities are established globally and simultaneously across the LandWarNet rather than in the traditional incremental or stove-pipe implementations that produced inconsistent capabilities across the force.  The NSC track focuses on some of the broad-based enterprise capabilities currently in development.

Session 1:      Enabling Expeditionary Capabilities in a CONUS Based Army

(This session is being presented to Track 1 and Track 6 concurrently)

Speaker:  BG Brian Donahue

In an era of Persistent Conflict our Nation will expect the Army to deploy modular forces with little or no notice from geographically dispersed locations.  Our ability to respond globally depends on expeditionary capabilities; much of it is network dependent and must be enabled from our initial notice, deployment, fight upon arrival and win all within austere environments. To ensure expeditionary connectivity from fort to foxhole, the Army must organize its tactical and operational linkages with the robust strategic linkages to better enable both, at the halt and on the move, network capabilities.  This construct will integrate our links into the Global Information Grid, and can seamlessly integrate into the Theater Information Grids.

Organizing a Network Service Center construct is critical to the LandWarNet.  This construct will provide economies and efficiencies of centralized network services, significant improvements in Computer Network Defense posture, and key enabling linkages to expeditionary forces.

1230 - 1315

Session 2:    Transforming LandWarNet to a Network Service Center Based Global Construct

Speaker: COL Marc Harris, CIO/G-6

The LandWarNet - Network Service Center (NSC) based global construct enables Joint warfighting for a predominantly CONUS based generating and operating force by providing network dependent capabilities through all phases of Joint operations. In end state the LandWarNet - NSC based global construct achieves the following major objectives: Enable network-dependent expeditionary capabilities; dramatically improve the Information Assurance and Computer Network Defense (IA/CND) Posture; Provide economies and efficiencies; and establish an Army enterprise activity within the Joint Enterprise.

Session 3:      Resource Forest and Collaboration Services

Speaker: Mr. Bob Bachert, NETCOM/ESTA

Resource forest and collaboration services is a roadmap for the implementation of a global directory construct within the Army Enterprise.  This session shares the vision, strategy and direction for a Global Active Directory (AD) environment that will provide a standard approach to accessing resources on the LandWarNet.  The enhanced features of Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007 will be discussed, in addition to how this technology will be integrated into the Area Processing Centers.  An overview will be provided on the architecture strategic concept and the integration from the current active directory environment to a global active directory construct.  During this session, the latest information will be discussed as it relates to current AD policy, technical guidance, and operation and maintenance (O&M) concepts.  You will learn what is required to transition from the current AD environment to a global construct.

1445 - 1545

Session 4:      Account and Service Provisioning

Speaker: Mr. Bob Bachert, NETCOM/ESTA

Enterprise Directory Services (EDS) provisioning allows for a more powerful way to use and share information services by users across the enterprise.  As a means for realizing the creation of the Global Information Grid, EDS affords assurance, access, and services which can be used by the warfighter regardless of location, role, or deployment.  In addition, EDS account and service provisioning can be used to multiply the warfighter’s capabilities, giving the advantage and broader choice of alternatives to the mission goal.  As defined as the movement of user identities, data, and services from a Generating Force (GF) AD forest to and from a Deployed Force (DF) AD forest, this session will demonstrate that accounts and services can be provisioned across forest boundaries.  An update to EDS-Lite, EDS Provisioning, an overview of the phases of EDS, and a clearly defined relationship to Joint enterprise will also be provided.

1615 - 1730

Session 5:      LandWarNet Intranet

Speaker: Mr. Mike Bomba, NETCOM/ESTA

Enabling warfighter operations across institutional and expeditionary networks is the stayed objective of the LandWarNet Intranet. The LWN Intranet will require changes across all three primary components of all
associated systems (people, processes and technology). It will baseline and secure all networked systems from the warrior's workstation to the Army's
strategic and enterprise services. LWN Intranet will enable global, secure, standardized, always-on, plug-n-play access for all Army users.

Session 6:      Broadbased NetOps Capabilities

Speaker: Mr. Rod Trevino, NETCOM/ESTA

This session will present concepts, architecture, processes and capabilities NETCOM is developing, implementing, and integrating to operate, manage, and defend the LandWarNet. The session will center on the current capabilities and tools being fielded today to execute the NetOps mission at all echelons in the LandWarNet.  Additional topics will include:  LandWarNet NetOps Architecture (LNA), Host Based Security System, Configuration Management Data Base (CMDB), NetOps Data Strategy, and a number of other DoD initiatives.  The session highlights the use of these processes and capabilities in the activation of the 7th Signal Command (Theater) as an example of the use of NetOps to operationalize Information Technology (IT) in a theater.

1100 - 1215 Session 7:     Track Outbriefing
