Products and Services
Mr. William Nallo, PMP, Branch Chief Future Operations, Army Publishing Directorate, E-Business Division
In our quest to transform the Army’s publishing process into an “e-business”, the Army Publishing Directorate has developed products and services that are capable of supporting the Army enterprise, and that directly contributes to the daily effectiveness and efficiency of the Army. The principal enabler for digital publishing and the electronic distribution of APD products and services is an enterprise content management infrastructure, Enterprise Content Management Services (ECMS), which includes work flow, digital signature, records management, document management, reporting, repository, search and collaboration tools. Products such as Automated Forms, Publishing Tools, Task Tracking Tools, Process/Work Flow Tools, Printing, Document Authentication, Army Electronic Library, and Content Management minimize the time required for each soldier to perform administrative functions such as filling out OERs and NCOERs, keeping the soldiers’ primary focus directed toward their mission. Services such as Document Editing, DA PAM 25-30, Form Design, and the My Forms Portal contribute significantly to the overall operation of the Army as measured by 7 million hits to the APD content weekly. Moving forward, APD is dedicated to and has already contributed to moving the Army to a paperless paradigm which is supported by automation and content management services. |

Utilizing the Enterprise Content Management Services Infrastructure
Mr. William Nallo, PMP, Branch Chief Future Operations, Army Publishing Directorate, E-Business Division
The Army Publishing Directorate has been working hard to move from paper based processes and products into “e-publishing. As a critical part of that change, we have leveraged IT software and hardware in order to automate the publishing process, and make our products and services available electronically via the web. Enterprise Content Management Services (ECMS) is a key enabler of e-publishing. ECMS consists of a three-tier architecture which is accessible anywhere in the world via AKO, providing support for automated forms, the Army Electronic Library, workflow capability, publishing, content management, and user application implementation. The infrastructure evolves from COTs products that ensure a secure, efficient utilization of the Army’s data resources residing in two APCs to provide COOP capability. Several applications that are form-centric have been developed to capture the process flow required to implement critical Army functions. Many of capabilities provided by ECMS are free while others require supporting hardware and software, which generate a cost to the originator of the process. Tools that support the infrastructure are Lotus Forms, Publishing Tools, Web Sites, Help Desk, and internal APD workflow applications. |
