MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: The purpose of this event is to provide educational content to small businesses and to offer an outreach opportunity for AFCEA, its member companies and federal government concerns. The greater Philadelphia area has much activity geared toward leveraging the many academic institutions in the area to attract new technology research efforts and encouraging entrepreneurs. There are numerous offerings available to the local community on SBIR/STTR programs, grant writing, etc. Our program is designed to complement these efforts with programming focused on essential business development skills. The common element that unifies the subject matter for this event is the Business Development Cycle. All content relates back to this common thread that reinforces the distinctive steps in the cycle when developing business in the federal sector.
Ample opportunities provided for networking among participants & presenters.

The following material was adopted from the Union League of Philadelphia Website: http://www.unionleague.org
History of the Union League:
The Union League, which occupies an entire city block in the center of Philadelphia’s commercial and cultural district, is a shining jewel of history in a city defined by such treasure. Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League has hosted U.S. presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and visiting dignitaries from around the globe. It has also given loyal support to the American military in each conflict since the Civil War, and continues to be driven by its founding motto, “Love of Country Leads.” Early efforts and influence of the Union League of Philadelphia laid the philosophical foundation of other Union Leagues across the nation.
Dress Code:
The League adheres to a strict dress code policy. The League requires a jacket be worn by men when dining in any of the restaurants. The exceptions to this policy are breakfast Monday through Sunday and lunch on Saturday, which allow business casual. Business casual is defined as a collared shirt and slacks for men and appropriate attire for women. Jeans, denim wear, athletic attire, tee shirts, shorts, baseball caps, sneakers or tattered clothes are never permitted on the first or second floor of the League house (where the restaurants and meeting rooms are located). Guests staying at the Inn at the League or members using the Fitness Center may come and go as they are by using the entrance on Sansom Street located on the ground floor (which is where the hotel lobby/front desk is located).
Hotel
In order to make your experience as convenient as possible, AFCEA has secured a room block on-site at the Inn at the League for our attendees traveling from out of town. The rate for these rooms is $189 (plus 7% tax) and it is good through September 24, 2008. When contacting the Inn to make your room reservation, just reference the AFCEA Small Business Conference to get this special rate. Availability of hotel rooms in center city Philadelphia is unusually constrained due to a concurrent city-wide convention. Please make your reservations as soon as possible.
The Inn at the Union League
This newly renovated Four-Diamond hotel, The Inn at the League, located at 1450 Sansom, between Broad and 15th Streets, is centrally located on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts. The Inn at the League has 84 guest rooms and suites, each with its own charm. Truly in a class by itself, The Inn offers an incomparable mix of distinctive history and old world hospitality. Many of our first time guests have referred to us as the "best-kept secret in Center City Philadelphia."

Travel
Philadelphia and the Union League are easily accessible from the Washington D.C. area. The driving time is approximately 2.5 – 3 hours from D.C. There is a parking garage directly across the street from the Union League. Parking rates are listed below the driving directions. In light of high fuel prices, we scheduled the conference so that those traveling from out of town could travel by rail as well. Amtrak service is available between Union Station in D.C. and Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. The Union League is a short taxi ride from the train station. Those traveling on Amtrak could come up to Philadelphia early on the 16th and return to D.C. that evening if desired. Roundtrip Amtrak fares start at under $100 depending on the chosen schedule.
