Data and Applications Security

Recent developments in information systems technologies have resulted in computerizing many applications in various business areas. Data has become a critical resource in many organizations, and therefore, efficient access to data, sharing the data, extracting information from the data, and making use of the information has become an urgent need. The advent of the World Wide Web has resulted in even greater demand for managing data, information and knowledge effectively. As the demand for data and information management increases, there is also a critical need for maintaining the security of the data, applications and information systems. Data and information have to be protected from unauthorized access as well as from malicious corruption. This course will describe the various threats to data and applications security including access control violations, integrity violations, unauthorized intrusions and sabotage. Various techniques to enforce security will be discussed.

Introduction to Net-Centric Warfare

Network Centric Warfare is quickly becoming a fundamental consideration in acquiring and maintaining military and civil government communications networks. This course provides an in-depth view of networks, including how they should be protected, how they are attacked and what approaches the Services are taking to defend against these attacks. The class presents the essential components and characteristics of networks. It addresses how those components (LANs, RF cable, optical cable and radio/satellite) are defined, modeled and managed. It describes analytical considerations in network design and includes a workshop/problem solving exercise. The course includes specific Army, Navy, Air Force and OSD (C3I) views of of Net-Centric warfare so the attendees will receive a DoD wide view of the challenges associated with this modern form of warfare. It also includes industry views from PanAmSat and Cisco. This course describes the fundamental aspects of network centric warfare with emphasis on current policies, procedures and Service approaches to protecting command and control networks.
