Welcome to the fall 2009 edition of Intelligence Watch –AFCEA’s online newsletter designed to help keep you informed of activities and services supporting intelligence professionals.
This issue includes information on upcoming AFCEA Intelligence events, including an NGA Industry Day. It highlights recent changes in the AFCEA Intelligence Committee leadership and membership. It announces a new blog focused on small businesses, previews the Spring Intelligence Symposium, opens the call for AFCEA Intelligence award nominations, reminds that the writing contest deadline is near, and more!

New Intelligence Committee and Members Announced
Mr. Kent Schneider, President and CEO, AFCEA International, has selected Dr. Bill Nolte, Director, Program for Intelligence Research and Education, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland, as the new chairman of the AFCEA Intelligence Committee. Dr. Nolte replaces Mr. Chris Haakon who has served as chairman for the past three years. In addition, after its annual industry new member campaign, the AFCEA Intelligence Committee selected five new private sector members, including one Young AFCEAN. The AFCEA Intelligence Committee is comprised of sixty representatives from government intelligence agencies and the private sector.

AFCEA Fall Intelligence Symposium Sold Out
The 28th annual AFCEA Fall Intelligence Symposium will take place on October 14-15, 2009, in the National Reconnaissance Office, Chantilly VA, and unfortunately for many is sold out. The program will use a cross-cutting approach to assess the impact of the widening threat spectrum and changing national guidance and budget priorities on the Intelligence Community and the private sector. Key community leaders including the DNI; USD(I); Vice Chairman JCS; Director NSA; Deputy Director FBI; and more will provide their perspectives, adding context for sessions addressing the economic threat, the military threat, the proliferation threat, and the cyber threat.

Spring Symposium Topic: Intelligence
R & D
We haven’t held the fall symposium yet (October 14-15, 2009, in the NRO), but planning is already underway for the spring symposium (April 21-22, 2009, in the DIAC)! Under the leadership of Mr. Zal Azmi, Senior Vice President, CACI; and CAPT Joseph Mazzafro, USN (Ret.), Intelligence Community Strategic Plans and Business Development, Oracle Corporation (National Security Group), the spring symposium will examine how the public and private sector R&D communities work with the Intelligence Community (IC). The symposium will compare and contrast how government, industry, and academia conduct R&D of interest to the IC with an eye towards identifying best practices and highlighting programmatics. Intelligence Forum for Small Businesses - Video Available
On June 17, 2009, the AFCEA Intelligence and Small Business Committees hosted a half-day forum focused on the realities and practicalities of doing business with the Intelligence Community. In an unclassified setting designed specifically for small businesses trying to enter the intelligence market, agency CIOs and Small Business Executives provided their insights and perspectives. A free video of the forum is available online. Watch for another small business forum in 2010.

New AFCEA Small Business Blog Added
Dan Callahan, author and consultant to small businesses, has joined the AFCEA Intelligence team to author a monthly blog focused on small businesses wanting to do business with the Intelligence Community. Almost 80% of AFCEA's corporate members are small businesses. Dan’s blog will provide advice, tips, suggestions and techniques that can foster success for small business entrepreneurs as they seek to penetrate what can be a very challenging task.

$2000 For Your Thoughts - Deadline Nears
AFCEA Intelligence and the Naval Intelligence Professionals/Naval Intelligence Foundation (NIP/NIF) are co-sponsoring two writing contests – one focused on collecting intelligence and the balance that must be achieved among safety, security and privacy; and the other focused on naval intelligence! Both contests provide monetary prizes and the chance for publication in SIGNAL Magazine. With a submission deadline of October 31, 2009, it’s to be writing!

AFCEA Intelligence Awards - Online Submission
Annually, AFCEA seeks to identify and honor intelligence professionals who are making a difference in the intelligence and national security arena. There are two levels of recognition: a senior level award (one winner) and a mid-level award (two winners). Nominees do not have to be AFCEA members. Nominations can come from anyone, and the online forms are easy to complete. This is your chance to recognize someone you know who is making a difference.

Intelligence Scholarships Available
Courtesy of Terremark Worldwide Inc., CSC, Mosaic, and Sparta, Inc., in 2009 AFCEA awarded two undergraduate scholarships at $2,250 each and three graduate scholarships at $5,000 each. The scholarships were presented to students pursuing degrees in intelligence-related majors. Similar scholarships will be awarded in 2010 and application details are now available.
