Welcome to the summer edition of the AFCEA Intelligence Watch. This is the Association’s online newsletter designed to keep you informed of activities and services supporting intelligence professionals.
We are hard at work on three important upcoming events that may be of interest to you: NGA Industry Day (September 18),our annual Fall Intelligence Symposium (October 15-16), and a Counterintelligence Conference (October 29).

NGA to Speak to Industry about Agency Priorities
Continuing a series begun in 2003, AFCEA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) will co-sponsor NGA Industry Day on September 18, 2008, in Chantilly, VA. The day will feature the NGA leadership talking about where the Agency is headed in the next 3-5 years. The goal of the day is to educate members of industry about NGA priorities and potential business opportunities.

Fall Intelligence Symposium will Focus on Critical Infrastructure Protection
Planning is underway for the AFCEA Fall Intelligence Symposium taking place on October 15-16, 2008, in the National Reconnaissance Office, Chantilly, VA. As part of an ongoing series surveying issues of significance for the Intelligence Community, the fall symposium will explore intelligence support to critical infrastructure protection. Program details and online registration will be available soon on the AFCEA Intelligence web site (intel.afcea.org).

Counterintelligence Conference to Warn U.S. Industry and Academia
AFCEA and the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive will join forces on October 29, 2008, to present a one day unclassified conference focused on the foreign espionage threat to U.S. technology, intellectual property, and trade secrets. This event is a follow-on event to one held last December in Sunnyvale, CA. Program details and online registration are coming soon to intel.afcea.org.

AFCEA Announces 2008 Intelligence Award Winners
AFCEA annually recognizes intelligence professionals for their work on behalf of the Intelligence Community and the nation. We are honored to announce that this year’s winners are The Honorable Mike McConnell, Director of National Intelligence; Mr. Bob Gourley, CTO and founder of Crucial Point LLC.; and Mr. Dick Schaeffer, Jr., Information Assurance Director, National Security Agency.

Latest AFCEA Intelligence White Paper
The government and industry members of the AFCEA Intelligence Committee have completed their ninth white paper. The theme of the paper is “Enabling a Responsive and Agile Intelligence Enterprise.” The paper is available online with a comments feature that lets you provide instant feedback. These papers are distributed widely within the Intelligence Community as a way of contributing to the dialogue on important issues requiring inputs and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

AFCEA Intelligence Announces 2008 Writing Contest
The topic for the 2008 AFCEA Intelligence writing contest is “Guidelines for Developing, Nurturing and Leading Intelligence Professionals.” The contest provides a first place prize of $2,000 and the potential for publication in SIGNAL Magazine, a second place prize of $1,000 and a third place prize of $500.

AFCEA Launches New Intelligence Scholarships
With generous financial support from Terremark Worldwide Inc., Mosaic Inc., and Computer Sciences Corporation, AFCEA Intelligence and the AFCEA Educational Foundation have established three scholarships aimed at undergraduate and graduate students pursuing academic degrees in global security, intelligence studies, and/or foreign languages. These new intelligence scholarships will complement the AFCEA Educational Foundation’s existing academic outreach in the hard sciences. In conjunction with AFCEA chapters worldwide, the AFCEA Educational Foundation annually distributes over $1.5 million dollars in grants and scholarships!
