Welcome to the 2008 AFCEA Intelligence Writing Contest! Annually, AFCEA Intelligence offers intelligence professionals an opportunity to express themselves on a topic of importance to the Intelligence Community and national security. What follows are the details for this year's contest. Please read them carefully. Entries not fully complying with the contest guidelines will not be considered. Contest Details Topic: Guidelines for Developing, Nurturing and Leading Intelligence Professionals The real "capital" of the Intelligence Community (IC) is its people. Yet many argue that the IC invests more in deploying technology than it does in taking care of its human resource. You have 30 minutes with the next Director of National Intelligence and President of the United States. What recommendations do you have for them regarding the development, nurturing and leadership of the people of the Intelligence Community? Deadline: 11:59pm EST, October 31, 2008 Length: No more than 2,500 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) Eligibility: The contest is open to everyone. Prizes First Place: $2,000, a two-year membership in AFCEA, and the AFCEA Medallion Second Place: $1,000 and a two-year membership in AFCEA Third Place: $500 and a two-year membership in AFCEA
Notification Winners will be notified in writing not later than January 15, 2009.
The names of the winners and their submissions will be posted on the AFCEA Intelligence website no later than January 31, 2009.
Contest Guidelines Entries must be unclassified original analytical and/or interpretive work not previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission for the contest constitutes the author’s permission to publish. Winning entries become the property of AFCEA International and may be published in Signal Magazine or other sponsored journals. It is the responsibility of the author to meet any requirement for prepublication security review prior to submission.
A panel of intelligence professionals will judge all entries and make the final selections. Submissions will be evaluated on their originality, significance, relevance, and clarity of presentation. Entries will be judged without knowing the authors’ identities.
Entries must be submitted by email to intelcontest@afcea.org. Email submissions Email submissions must include “AFCEA Intelligence Essay Contest” as the subject with the submission itself as an attachment in Word (.doc). Include the following information in the body of the email:
To ensure anonymity of the author during judging, the attached submission should include only its title. No other identifying information may be included. Each page of the submission beyond the first should show the title as a header. The attachment’s file name should reflect the essay’s title to the extent practical.
