The IC: Not To Big To Fail, But...
“This is my sound bite take away from what was certainly an event filled if not significant week (July 19-23) for the Intelligence Community (IC). It is probably not happenstance that the Washington Post ran its almanac facts without context three part investigative "TOP SECRET AMERICA" story on the IC (July 19, 20, & 21), the same week the Senate Select Committee for Intelligences (SSCI) surprisingly relented to political pressure and quickly scheduled a confirmation hearing (July 20th) on Jim Clapper to be the fourth Director of National Intelligence (DNI).” Read the rest of Joe Mazzafro’s latest Mazz-INT blog – part of the family of AFCEA Intelligence blogs. The other two focus on technology and intelligence and small businesses and intelligence.

SIGNAL Magazine's Focus on Intelligence
Each month, SIGNAL Magazine, AFCEA’s award winning monthly journal, includes articles focused on topics of interest to intelligence professionals and companies that support the Intelligence Community. Below is a sampling of recent articles.
Flexible Batteries Unfold Technical Possibilities
U.S. warfighters may one day have their handheld communications and sensor equipment powered by batteries that are “grown” using biological processes. Researchers are manipulating viruses to create power sources that can be poured or sprayed into containers or woven into uniforms and ballistic vests. By using genetically engineered viruses as templates for semiconductors and metals, scientists are building small, highly efficient batteries that are more powerful and longer lasting than current platforms.

Fiber Enables Battlefield Radio Transmissions
New fiber optic technology is allowing warfighters to place antennas far away from their radio systems. This capability can both provide greater protection from attack and increase radio signal range. The technology differs from conventional optical fiber communications in that it does not convert digital signals to photons for transmission down the fiber. Instead, it converts analog radio signals directly into photons. These photons are reconverted into an analog wave signal and amplified at the other end of the fiber

Air Defense System to Forge Many Platforms Into One Network
By the middle of this decade, a new command and control system will provide U.S. Army air defense forces with an extended view of the airspace over a battlefield. The capability will integrate the service’s sensors and weapons into a single network, allowing each platform to perform to its maximum abilities while minimizing operational weaknesses. Commanders will be able to access data quickly from any sensor on the network and order any weapon to engage a target.
