NORTHERN VIRGINIA CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jun 08, 2012

Inaugural Women In NOVA Event

Approximately 70 women, ages 18 to 82, attended the chapter's WIN Inaugural Event held in June at the Tysons Corner Sheraton. Women in NOVA (WIN) is a new committee within the chapter that focuses on supporting, improving and increasing women's participation, relevance, impact, opportunities and recognition within the chapter and the greater AFCEA community. The committee's board introduced the new organization and its goals and objectives, and invited attendees to help shape and grow the organization's success by sharing ideas on how future participation and participants can leverage WIN to benefit themselves, their business and the community at large.

The event's theme, “WIN Leveraging AFCEA for Success,” fit the event well. Presentations highlighted how through WIN, women in academia, government and industry can leverage AFCEA to meet philanthropic, personal and professional goals. Attendees participated in the event by sharing their own personal and professional goals and objectives, which included: networking opportunities, business maturation advice, career guidance, insights into new technologies and their place within the AFCEA community, and the desire to increase the number of women entering science, technology, engineering and mathematics career fields beginning with education. The group's board includes Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, chair; Diane Hahn Bellegarde, vice chair; Paige Atkins; and Karen Van Buren. WIN is sponsored and supported by the chapter and championed by Chuck Corjay. For more information on WIN or to become involved, please visit the chapter's website.
