General on Evolving Command Mission
In January, Brig. Gen. Richard D. Evans III, USAF, mobilization assistant to the director, global operation, U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM), Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, spent time with the chapter discussing the Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO) mission. Gen. Evans spoke about the variety of STRATCOM missions supporting other combatant commands, one of which is Joint Electronic Warfare (EW). Specifically, the STRATCOM commander is responsible for advocating joint EW capabilities; providing contingency EW support to other combatant commanders; and supporting combatant command joint training efforts. Gen. Evans touched on how STRATCOM typically uses component commands to handle its various mission sets. However, with JEMSO, it didn't fit the typical component command construct. Instead, it stayed in house with J-3 operations. The general highlighted adaptation will be required to reach their objective, and the command is doing a lot with existing infrastructure/manpower by dual hatting effectively. In parting, Gen. Evans pointed out securing the cloud for global collaboration is key.
