Chapter Sponsors Regional STEM Fair
The Hillsborough Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair in Tampa, Florida, is the largest in the state of Florida. At this year's event in February, Capt. Gerry Slevin, USN, chapter president, spoke and presented awards to children in grades K through 12. The chapter was the title sponsor for the event.
Hillsborough STEM is a school-level competition involving thousands of students in grades from more than 180 public and private schools. Approximately 1,500 student projects are selected to compete at the regional level. Students experience firsthand the creativity and perseverance required for high-level achievement. Working with these projects also develops the use of technology and presentation skills needed in today's workplace. Winners in selected categories go on to compete at the state and international levels. A portion of these funds will be used to provide STEM-related classroom grants.
The government and industry companies and members of AFCEA rely upon thinkers and problem solvers for future work force and leadership. The innovations and discoveries that were showcased during this event and in future years will help the nation remain strong and continue leading the world in technological and scientific thought.
The fastest growing occupations will require significant backgrounds in mathematics and science. The education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are exciting and plentiful
