New Perspective on Communication Capabilities

In January, the C4 Command hosted the first 2013 chapter conference, which opened with a speech from Rear Adm. Edoardo Compiani, ITN, C4 commander. The admiral briefly introducing the C4 Commandís 2013 commitments to support Italian Ministry of Defense efforts to innovate and exploit interoperability and communication capabilities. Then, Lt. Gen. Pietro Finocchio, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, introduced the event, recalling the main goal of AFCEA to be the catalyst of osmosis between armed forces and industry to enrich knowledge.

The technical session began with a presentation delivered by Filippo Gemma, event chairman and general manager of GM Spazio. After introducing the company, he focused his remarks on the availability of the new Analytical Graphics Incorporated Systems ToolKit (AGI-STK) version 10. This version is capable of addressing the unique needs of industry and the armed forces in modeling and simulation to satisfy mission planning, mission management and mission analysis requirements. The presentation mainly concentrated on the new STK 10 free version, capable of sustaining market players and end users in these challenging economic times.

Giuseppe Corrao, AGI, then demonstrated STK 10 features, running two simulation scenarios dedicated to maritime and aerospace environments and highlighting the capabilities to support common operational picture needs. Ivano Amador Caddeo, GM Spazio, presented some additional features of STK10 using a maritime surveillance scenario. The technical session ended with a presentation by Gino Bucciol, Officina Stellare, and Filippo Gemma, GM Spazio, who detailed an interesting joint project carried out by both companies to satisfy users expectations in Space Situational Awareness (SSA). The two Italian companies merged their competences to offer aerospace market a turnkey solution able to support decision makers facing collision avoidance issues. Their speech ended with the presentation of the effective results of this joint solution to measure maneuver effects of the Italian Ministry of Defense SICRAL satellite mission. Gemma concluded the technical session by thanking technical team members David Godwin and Brenda Eichel of AGI, Andrea Aquilini, GM Spazio, and Giovanni Paglioli, Officina Stellare, for their support to the workshop.

To wrap up the event, Gen. Finocchio underlined how these events act as dissemination boosters for the Italian excellence in hi-tech fields beyond country boundaries and to increase Italian business presence worldwide. Adm. Compiani closed the event by thanking all the attendees for their attention and participation in the technical debate.
