LEXINGTON-CONCORD CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 02, 2013

Scholarships Awarded to 25 Students

The chapter held its annual Fellowship Awards Banquet at the Burlington Marriott Hotel, Massachusetts, in May. John Barrette, chairman of board, chapter Educational Foundation, presided as master of ceremonies. Scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to 25 exceptional high school seniors pursuing undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Ten corporate sponsors participate in the awards program by providing each student with paid summer internships to provide them with practical STEM experience before entering college. Ed Barrett, son of the late Gilbert Barrett (founder of the Fellowship Awards program), presented the Gilbert A. Barrett Award to Evan Doyle, Andover High School. This award carries an additional $1,000 scholarship to the top ranked student amongst all the Fellowship award winners. James Shields, president and chief executive officer of Draper Laboratory, was the featured guest speaker and provided insightful and practical advice to students about choosing STEM career paths.
