Annual Race for Excellence Raises Scholarship Funds

The chapterís 6th Annual Race For Excellence 5k and 1-Mile Fun Run kicked off in April in front of SAICís Cyber Innovation Center in Columbia, Maryland. The race benefited the chapterís Scholarship Fund, which provides merit-based college scholarships to deserving local high-school students. The race was truly a community event, supported by more than 30 companies and local vendors. D.J. Brett Skinner excited the crowd with motivating music and complimentary messages, and Zumba dance routines helped get the bodies moving and the muscles warmed up. Face painting was a hit, as usual, for people of all ages, including the adults. Eggspectation provided on-site complementary breakfast, which spectators and runners alike were able to enjoy. The after party, held at Nottinghams in Columbia, Maryland, boasted a kidsí room with balloon animals, a photo booth and a Pirate entertainer. Music, door prizes, raffles, and complimentary beverages and food added to the fundraisers festivities. The fastest team was Northrop Grumman with a combined time of 1:55:34.9 through the first five finishers. Other race results included the largest team, Varen Technologies with 96 participants; and fastest finisher, James Fisher, 22, of Millersville, Maryland, with a time of 17:53.0. There were 1,044 total runners registered making up 67 teams, and the event raised $59,500 for the chapterís scholarship program.
