Heartland TechNet Symposium 2013

More than 300 information technology enthusiasts participated in the chapter’s Heartland TechNet Symposium on May 30, the chapter’s first in more than five years. Capt. Keith Hauenstein, USAF, director of operations, 55th Strategic Communication Squadron, Offutt Air Force Base, and TechNet Coordinator, Greater Omaha Chapter, said, “The chapter hasn’t had a symposium in a while and I’m glad to be a part of its resurgence. Our path and direction was clear; we put together a quality day of technical presentations that even helped some earn six hours of CompTIA Continuing Education Credits. Overall, the TechNet was a tremendous success, garnering $16,000 for our chapter’s scholarship program.” Lunch featured a presentation by Maj. Gen. John W. Raymond, USAF, director of plans and policy, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base. Gen. Raymond talked about the power of collaboration and information. The general shared a story about his involvement in the nuclear radiation leak in Japan after the 2011 tsunami. He talked about the necessity of running modeling scenarios in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami and how this led him to collaborate with Google. The general talked about the global synchronization for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and how fundamental collaboration is to that effort. Gen. Raymond provided a summary of 10 items organizations need to consider in order to facilitate collaboration. He concluded by re-emphasizing collaboration is key due to the missions we support. TechNet 2013 was complimented by a host of major companies that sponsored 18 different booths.
