New Chapter Presents First Grant

The newly formed chapter made an immediate impact on the Wiesbaden community. Less than 90 days after its incorporation, Rock Schmidt, chapter president, Rudy Lunasin, chapter secretary, and the other board members presented its first Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Grant in June. A check for $1,000 was presented to Frank Pendzich, faculty adviser to the Wiesbaden High School RoboWarriors. Pendzich is an engineering and technology teacher for the Wiesbaden American High School in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was nominated for his pioneer vision and enthusiasm to teach children in the field of STEM. Pendzich has been instrumental in the Wiesbaden American High School starting and supporting President Obama's STEM initiative by teaching the robotics course since its inception. His passion for teaching engineering and technology is evident with his actions. He believes that STEM is very important and does everything he can to relay this message to interested children. At the end of Pendzich's signature block, he has a quote that says it all: “Take my class and save the world.” Under his leadership, the program has grown tremendously. Pendzich started the Wiesbaden RoboWarriors club a few years ago, where students build a robot every year to compete in regional competitions in the United States. This year, Wiesbaden's Robot was named Frau Pow! 5.0 and competed well in Orlando, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The STEM grant will be used to help the students build a new robot, Frau Pow! 6.0, for next year's robotic competitions.
