Committee Looks at Cyber and Physical Security Issues

In August, Women In NOVA (WIN) hosted a breakfast panel that brought together key government and industry leadership to discuss the topic of the “Convergence of Cyber and Physical Security.” Panelists engaged in a lively dialogue around this critical yet often underappreciated topic addressing the challenges currently being faced within the federal government. Defense Threat Reduction Agency representative Bill Austin recognized the challenges associated with securing a broad range of facilities from both the physical structure requirements as well as network accessibility to the sites. To further that dialogue, Roberta Bobbie Stempfley of the Department of Homeland Security identified the uniqueness of each critical infrastructure site and the cyber vulnerability of aging systems. A different exposure, presented by Col. Claire Cuccio, USA, Office of the Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, is the human element, where site and network security practices are not regularly executed.
