Event Outlines Defense Department JIE

In September, the chapter held its 6th Annual Joint Warfighter IT Day in Tysons Corner, Virginia. Headlining the event was Adm. James Winnefeld Jr., USN, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, offering insights on the U.S. Defense Department's move to enterprise services under the Joint Information Environment (JIE) with information technology being a key to meeting Defense Department budget reductions. Lt. Gen. Michael Basla, USAF, A-6/chief information officer (CIO), discussed cyberthreats, commenting there is no peacetime in cyberspace and discussing how the standards-based JIE will offer help to counter these threats. Lt. Gen. Mark Bowman, Joint Staff J-6/CIO, reinforced the drive to enterprise services during his luncheon keynote and indicated industry needed to offer economy in light of the Defense Department's current and projected budget cuts. Lt. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins Jr., director, Defense Information Systems Agency, detailed security and budgetary drivers for the JIE, as well as ongoing effort towards the JIE vision. An information-packed breakout session helped couple small business attendees with prime contractor looking to team.
