Collaboration Across the Central Eastern Europe Region

In October, Maj. Gen. Klaus-Peter Treche, GEAF (Ret.), general manager, AFCEA Europe, and Petr Jirasek, regional vice president, visited Hungary and Slovakia to meet local chapter and military leaders and discuss options for increased support needed by local chapters. The Budapest, Hungary, visit focused on the reactivation of the Hungarian Chapter and its activities. During the stay, appointments with government and academia representatives complimented the board meetings. Together with Col. Tamas Rath, HUA, chapter president, attendees created and agreed upon an action plan for the next 12 months. The plan is promising and will result in growth in membership, the foundation of a student club in Budapest and the establishment of a Cyber Security Symposium at the end of the year in 2014. In Bratislava and the High Tatra Mountains (Slovakia), support was rendered for a Scientific Military Symposium and local student activities with more than 100 representatives from industry and academia as well as from the Czech and Slovak armed forces continuously attending. At a formal farewell dinner, another 20 high-ranking flag and general staff officers from six additional NATO countries attended. Additionally, the cooperation between AFCEA and the Slovak armed forces was strengthened during an office call with Lt. Gen. Peter Vojtek, Slovak chief of defense; his deputy, Lt. Gen. Peter Gajdo, who had just returned from his former position as Slovak representative to the Military Committee of NATO; and the J-6 of the Slovak General Staff, Col. Ivan Ilavski. In summary, the chapters of the “Central Eastern European Rim” are forming one of the most active European regions. That is why in March 2014, the European flagship event, TechNet International 2014, will be organized in cooperation with the NATO Communication and Information Agency in Bucharest, Romania.
