Workshop Covers Radar Systems Innovation

Hosted by the Centro Sperimentale di Volo (CSV) inside the Pratica di Mare military airport in September, the chapter organized a workshop entitled “Innovation in Radar Systems for Defense, Security and Electronic Warfare,” which focused on the innovation in systems and applications of radar technology. Maj. Gen. Fabio Molteni, CSV director, opened the activities and welcomed the guests, underlining the relationship between the CSV and the world of research and universities. Lt. Gen. Pietro Finocchio, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, introduced the workshop objectives, which aim to continue the analysis of radar technology started one year ago during the Future Radar Technology conference. Professor Gianni Vernazza, CNIT director, introduced the CNIT activities and its major role in coordinating research activities. Gen. Francesco Castataro, TeleDife director, stated the interest of the armed forces in radar systems, mainly as the Procurement Agency. Gen. Basilio Di Martino, Teledife deputy director, introduced the first session on surface systems with a keynote address titled “Radars and Future Perspectives.” Professor Gaspare Galati, University of Rome Tor Vergata, gave a presentation about “Noise Radar Technology Applications to Marine Surveillance.” Professor Pierfrancesco Lombardo, University of Rome La Sapienza, introduced passive radar based on OFDM signals for air and surface traffic monitoring. Guido Arista, Elital, focused on platforms and installations for passive radars. Alberto Bicci, IDS, presented the ground-based interferometric SAR for slope stability monitoring. Louis Nastro, Applanix Land Systems director, introduced the Trimble Indoor Mobile Mapping System (TIMMS), Tecnologia per il rilievo 3D di interni. Paolo Coppola, INTECS, illustrated the application of radar systems for transportation security. Alfonso Farina, Selex ES, opened the second session with a keynote about avionic radars, stressing their peculiarity. Daniela Pistoia, Elettronica, gave a speech about the net-centric electronic defense and the role of avionics. Professor Marco Martorella, CNIT-RaSS Universit di Pisa, illustrated some advances in avionic and cognitive radar professor Andrea Massa, Universit di Trento, presented some “Innovative Techniques for the Design of Irregular Antenna Systems for Radar Applications.” Massimo Comparini, Telespazio, introduced the third session with a keynote on space systems. Col. Silvio Cau, CTIS director, illustrated the change detection with SAR systems. Professor Silvana Dalle Piane, Universit di Genova, gave a speech on adaptive nonlinear image processing and data fusion for sea and land monitoring from SAR. Professor Andrea Monti Guarnieri, Politecnico di Milano, presented the “Geosynchronous Swarm of SAR Satellites.” Professor Maurizio Migliaccio, Universit Napoli Parthenope, introduced polarimetry of CosmoSkyMed for detecting manmade targets at sea. The conference ended with a round table about the “Development of Radar Systems and the Effects on Electronic Warfare” coordinated by Giorgio Di Bernardo Nicolai, Air Press journalist. The participants included Marco de Fazio, Selex ES; Massimo Comparini, Telespazio; Gen. Basilio Di Martino, ITAF, TeleDife; Andrea De Martino, Elettronica; Professor Tullio Bucciarelli, Universit degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza; and Professor Marina Ruggieri, Universit degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata. The group had a brilliant debate concluded by Gen. Finocchio in the afternoon.
