PALMETTO CHAPTER CHAPTER - Dec 05, 2013

Positioning, Navigation and Timing in Challenging Environments

The chapter welcomed Sarah MacConduibh, vice president of the Air Force Portfolio, MITRE Corporation's National Security Engineering Center, to speak on "Sustaining Capabilities in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) in increasingly Challenging Environments" at the December luncheon. During military operations, such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, global strike and precision geolocation, military assets need exact geographical location. Accurate knowledge of time is critical to synchronous operations, communications and command and control. Applications that expect and require highly accurate PNT information, under conditions such as electronic warfare, urban canyon and foliage, will continue to expand. To meet demands, a rapid paradigm shift away from legacy GPS signals toward a resilient multisatellite system, multisensor PNT user capability is ongoing and represents challenges and possibilities for military and civil communities. Her presentation explored options available to PNT user for robustness, redundancy, threat removal, and it highlighted important technology trends for military and civil programs.
