$2,000 Grant Presented to STEM School

In February, Jay Kanavos, chairman, Science Teaching Tools Committee, presented a $2,000 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) grant to John M. Brucato, executive director, Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA), and Chris Brandes, an AMSA biology teacher. Each year, the chapter supplements funds provided by AFCEA International to help local schools purchase high technology equipment to foster the interest of young students in the science and technology fields. This year, AMSA received one of two $2,000 grants from the chapter to purchase equipment needed to support the academy's hydroponics and aquaponics unit. The equipment will help 20-30 students evaluate the effects of nutrients and light deficiency on plants; selectively breed plants to improve productivity; and conduct cloning experiments increase the number of eatable products with the overall goal to improve production while using fewer resources.
