Seminar Held on Sustainable Marine Activities

In March, the chapter, with the support of the Directorate General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) of the Portuguese Ministry for the Agriculture and the Sea, organized a seminar entitled “RD&I for a Sustainable Future of Marine activities.” The seminar's main objective was to support companies with the relevant information on the operational needs of the military and government departments dealing with the Portuguese Sea data, for the European maritime research, development and innovation (RD&I) projects. This seminar attracted nearly 120 attendees, including members of the armed and security forces, government organizations, academia and research centers, and industry.
At the opening, Maria Joao Fernandes, national contact point for bioeconomy on the European Program Horizon 2020 and the “Blue Growth,” addressed the financing opportunities for the investigation and innovation of sea and marine ambient.
The seminar was organized in two sessions. The first one, under the responsibility of the representatives of the end users, was moderated by Rear Adm. Mario Durao, PON (Ret.), with presentations by the following institutions: the Directorate General for Maritime Policy, DGRM, Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf, Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute, DOCAPESCA, Portuguese Hydrographic Institute, Directorate General for Marine Authority and Coastal Control Unit of the Portuguese National Guard. The second session, moderated by Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), featured presentations from the following companies: Critical Software, Edisoft, ESRI Portugal, Inovaworks, Xsealence and PointC.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Coastal Maritime Traffic Control Centre Vessel Traffic System and to attend a live demonstration of the operations of maritime traffic control along the Portuguese coast.
