Keeping River Region IT Relevant

In February, the chapter hosted a luncheon at Wynlakes Country Club featuring guest speaker Herbert Hunter, director, Business Enterprise Division, Business and Enterprise Systems Directorate (BES), Maxwell Air Force Base-Gunter Annex. Hunterís presentation focused on the theme ďPartnering to Keep the River Region IT RelevantĒ and drew a full house of various military, government and industry attendees. Hunter has made it one of his top priorities to encourage synergy between River Region companies and local military installations. He mentioned the key benefit of increased support via open communication from both sides of the house is that it yields a successful business relationship for all and leads to more business partnership opportunities. He mentioned it is not only important to demand the best from your community but also from your people and to show them what right looks like. Hunter highlighted some measures he and the BES staff have enacted internally to ensure their team is performing at optimal levels, including: the Presidentís Fitness Challenge, walking tours throughout facilities/offices, the Happenings Board and Wingman Day. He mentioned the BES also went beyond the office environment to promote the importance of setting a good example by sponsoring $165 in gifts for a less fortunate family during the holiday season. The BES mission to motivate airmen/women has proved successful as is evidenced by seven recent BES award winners, including the chapterís own Kameke Mitchell, Young AFCEAN chapter president. He also mentioned that BES as a whole is striving to manage stakeholdersí expectations using a variety of methods including publishing news articles, newsletters, hosting kickoff meetings and global training webinars. Following Hunterís presentation, Tom Gwaltney, regional vice president, Mid-South Region, formally inducted the board of directors for the chapter: Lt. Col. Leonard Boothe, USAF, president; Eric Sloan, vice president; Candace Akerson, secretary; and Charisse Stokes, director, Education Foundation. Additionally, Col. Boothe took the opportunity to report the chapterís Young AFCEAN program had been honored at the AFCEA International level with a Model Program Award for 2013. In addition, Taylor Gardiner received a Distinguished Young AFCEAN Award. The chapter thanks Hunter for donating his time to share his thoughts and goals for promoting synergy and retaining information technology in the River Region and looks forward to planning equally successful luncheons in the future with the newly inducted board of directors.
