Rocky Mountain Chapter Gives Back to Community

In May, the chapter held its Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner at the Colorado Springs Antlers Hotel. Paula Miller, executive director, Pikes Peak Library District, spoke on the importance of life-long learning and the library's cultural and practical role in facilitating it within the community. She also previewed the opening of the country's most innovative library; Library 21C opens June 21 in Colorado Springs. The evening's highlight was the presentation of more than $100,000 in scholarships and grants. Eight high school students received renewable $2,000 scholarships to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees. Three airmen received $2,000 scholarships and two teachers received $5,000 scholarships toward STEM-based education degrees. The most far-reaching award was the $30,000 in grants. This year the chapter supported 12 El Paso County high schools. The grants covered telescopes, microscopes, math textbooks, gas chromatographs, forensics kits, graphing calculators and robotics kits. Finally, three local science fair winners were honored.
