Seminar Addresses Information Security and Risk Management

In May, the chapter and IDC Portugal organized a seminar on "Information Security and Risk Management in the 3rd Platform" at the Joint Defense Institute (IESM) in Lisbon. The event attracted more than 200 attendees, including members of the armed and security forces, government organizations, academia and research centers, and industry. The main objective of this seminar was to address the strategies and the most current topics in information security and risk management in this new technological paradigm based on cloud, mobility, big data and social business technologies. Jose Torres Sobral, National Security Authority, delivered the keynote address, showing the status in the development of the newly created National Cyber Security Center in Portugal. This center will be operationalized under the coordination of the National Security Office, acting in cooperation with the national structures responsible for cyberdefense, cybercrime, cyberterrorism and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Paulo Amaral, chapter vice president and professor at Catholic University, spoke about "Intelligence and Counterintelligence in Economic Security," pointing out that the economy depends on businesses, and if they are attacked, the economy will be compromised. Companies are still too focused on protecting the operability of the business, often neglecting the real value of information contained in their systems. Orlando Fontan, a consultant in project management and information security and professor at European University, pointed out that there is a growing number of victims of cybercrime, with motivations that can come from outside or be generated within the institutions, and that cybercrime actions are now available worldwide as a service. Organizations must take action, analyzing the potential threats and developing preventative practices and risk management, using social engineering in particular. Carla Zibreira, information technology security director at Presidium, spoke on "Log Management: The Core of Security Intelligence." Timoteo Figueiro from IDC presented the trends in information security and the security challenges, stressing that the third platform will boost biggest vulnerabilities, taking into account exposure levels generated. A study presented at the seminar found that safety is not at the top of the priorities of the organizations, and therefore managers must reset their priorities for investment in the field of security. It was pointed out that a holistic view of security must be implemented, including processes and services. The seminar also showed how the information technology industry has been developing solutions that enable private organizations and public authorities to deal with this problem, with the expected result of an increase in spending on information security, both nationally and worldwide. Dinis Fernandes from Unisys Portugal presented on new forms of protection.
