Pelican Chapter Welcomes Col. Burger

In May, the Pelican Chapter hosted Col. John Burger, USA, chief of the Joint Cyber Center at the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Col. Burger is responsible for the planning and execution of cyberspace operations in the CENTCOM area of responsibility, spanning 20 nations in the Middle East and Central Asia. The Joint Cyber Center designs and implements information assurance programs and active defense plans to assure cyber critical infrastructure. Col. Burger opened his presentation by immediately posing the question to the audience: "Why is cyberspace so difficult?" His response: "Humans underestimate risk we cannot visualize and situations where we are in control." To combat the problem, he offered up that there is a need to create strategic priorities for operating in cyberspace. Col. Burger stated the number one vulnerability is negligent users. Vulnerabilities caused by negligence can be solved through net discipline and educating senior leaders and users.
