Chapter Honors Teacher With STEM Award

The chapter gave its quarterly STEM teacher award in October to Teresa Broadnax, an engineering teacher and electric vehicle team coordinator at Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School. She has taught several science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses at the school since 2010, including Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Engineering Design and Development and Aerospace Engineering. Broadnax, or Ms. Tee, as her students, parents and peers affectionately call her, has an unwavering commitment to empowering students in the vast world of STEM. She goes above and beyond, making herself accessible before school, at lunch, after school, over the weekend and during spring break to provide students with support to ensure they are able to attain and master the various STEM skills. It is with diligence and expectation that she makes success a reachable opportunity and not simply an option for her students. Her passion is connecting STEM concepts to the real world. Her students participated in various stages of D.C. Streetcar construction; two female students secured yearlong paid internships with the company. In an effort to give students an opportunity to learn about engineering, green technology and project planning, Broadnax launched the Phelps Electric Vehicle Team. Students build, test, refine and compete with their very own electric vehicle. This vehicle is not only a recruitment tool, but also a mechanism for inspiring metro-area students in STEM. It is showcased in various community events. Broadnax was a robotics team mentor and a Saturday Math Academy (an enrichment and intensive intervention program) volunteer. Former students reach out to her for assistance and reassurance when STEM courses get tough. Her passion for kindling the flame inside the next generation of STEM professionals shines through her commitment and sacrifice. She models STEM instruction for peers, always willing and ready to take on additional responsibilities. Her dedication to inspiring students to develop their creative potential makes her an outstanding educator who is deserving of this award. She believes each and every student should be challenged and supported to reach his or her full potential. Broadnax holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction technology from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Broadnax is a firm believer in the power of industry to enrich teaching and learning and to transform students' lives. Her career is an amazing testament to hard work, dedication, perseverance and optimism.
