MONTGOMERY CHAPTER CHAPTER - Feb 24, 2017

Air Force Cyber College Dean Discusses Cyber Challenges

Dr. Panayotis "Pano" Yannakogeorgos, dean of the Air Force Cyber College, was the guest speaker for the chapter's February luncheon at Wynlakes Country Club, Montgomery, Alabama. Yannakogeorgos spoke to a full house of military, industry and government personnel on "Cyber Activities, Opportunities and Challenges." First, he stated some of the reasons that the United States has a cyber problem, including that systems deploy without proper security controls and that prosecution of cyber crime lacks consistency. Yannakogeorgos said part of the problem is that a lot of cyberspace is out of the country's jurisdiction, so prosecuting foreign cyber attacks is difficult, if not impossible. He then went on to discuss how Defense Department and Air Force guidance and education are working to fill the gaps, with the goal of preventing the cyber equivalent of Pearl Harbor or 9/11. The luncheon also served as an opportunity to formally install the chapter's elected officers for 2017: Brian Knott, president; Senior Master Sgt. Neil Stewart, USAF, vice president; Adam Vencill, Young AFCEAN Advisory Council president; Candace Akerson, secretary; Cheryl Brown, treasurer; and Charisse Stokes, director, Education Foundation. The chapter thanks Yannakogeorgos for sharing his insights and the Wynlakes Country Club for hosting the luncheon. The chapter also congratulates the newly installed team of officers and looks forward to a new year under its dedicated leadership.
