CANAVERAL CHAPTER Chapter • Jul 17, 2008

Kent Angell, director, Eco Datacenter Practice, Sun Microsystems, highlighted his company's efforts to improve its eco-performance as the featured speaker at the July meeting. Angell noted that in the past year, Sun Microsystems has reduced its energy consumption in its corporate datacenters by 60 percent, and it has increased its processing and storage capacity by 42 percent. Angell pointed out that personal computers and monitors should use the sleep and stand-by modes, and employees should be encouraged to turn off their systems before they go to meetings. Angell suggested replacing incandescent lights with fluorescent bulbs and installing sunscreen film on windows exposed to the afternoon sun. Angell also recommended ensuring new products are Energy Star 4.0-certified. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standard 1680, Environmental Performance Criteria, provides information on various levels of environmental performance.

The chapter also elected its officers and volunteers for the coming year.
