AFCEA on Second Life

Networking and collaboration opportunities abound in Second Life, a virtual world platform. AFCEA’s Second Life group is chartered for anyone interested in communications, information technology, intelligence or global security and who works or wants to work in one of these areas for the military, government or industry. Members of the group receive occasional notices about real-world events, SIGNAL Magazine articles of interest and updates to AFCEA-related blogs.  AFCEA members who participate in Second Life also have full access to the facilities available at AFCEA Island, which include meeting rooms, office space, a conference center, exhibit booths, an education facility and viewable media.

A Quick-Start Guide to Orientation
Visit join.secondlife.com to get started. There are several steps you'll need to go through before you can access the "grid."

  • Choose a name. Second Life gives you a limited list of last names to choose from. If you are not given many choices, you may want to try a less common first name. Some people choose their own last name to be their first name in Second Life. Whatever you choose, make a note of it because you'll need it to log in.
  • Choose a default avatar appearance. These can be changed later. A detailed tutorial on changing avatar appearance will be available soon.
  • Fill out the rest of the registration form. Be sure to choose an email address you can check easily.
  • Confirm your email address and download the proprietary software.
  • Run the program "Second Life" and enter the first name, last name and password you created during registration.

Congratulations! You are now in Second Life, in a default orientation zone. You will be in this area with other new users who are not AFCEA members, but by exploring the area and following the instructions that appear on your screen you can learn how to chat, search, walk, fly, use items and interact with the environment overall.

Once you become a Second Life resident, you can hook up with AFCEA by pulling up the search window, clicking on “Groups” and typing in “AFCEA.” When the group appears in the list, double click to get the group information then click on “Join.” Visit the island directly by clicking on AFCEA Island in Second Life.
