Cool App-titude: CloudOn for iPad

Want to take your work on the road? The CloudOn app lets you access Microsoft Office from your iPad.

The free app integrates with virtual versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint hosted in the cloud. Simply connect to the Internet and the program lets you create, view and edit files. It also integrates with Dropbox so that you can save files right to your workspace.

With CloudOn, you have the ability to rename, delete and manage documents in your Dropbox account; track changes while reviewing Word documents; display animation and transitions in PowerPoint presentations; open files directly from email; and automatically save documents, among others.

Cool App-titude: Compensation and Benefits Handbook for Wounded Warriors

A new app from the U.S. Defense Department provides wounded warriors with a comprehensive mobile resource guide. The Compensation and Benefits Handbook for Wounded, Ill and Injured Members of the Armed Forces is available for Android and iOS devices.

The application allows service members and their families to access information at any time about benefits available to them upon separation or retirement as a result of a serious injury or illness. It includes resources for recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration, including chapters on medical care, Defense Department pay and allowances, the Disability Evaluation System and returning to civilian life.

Cool App-titude: Peel

Channel surfing gets social. The free Peel app for iOS and Android makes personalized recommendations for TV shows based on your viewing history and what your friends are watching.

The program, developed by Peel Technologies Incorporated, lets you sign in, find and follow your friends, and see their favorite shows. You can share what you’re watching, give program recommendations, add comments to the discussion boards and see what others are viewing in real time.

Like Pandora or Netflix, the app provides better suggestions for new shows as it learns more about your tastes and preferences. It also features a list of what shows are trending in the app.

Cool App-titude: Army OneSource

A series of free Army OneSource apps provide users with resources on the go. Developed by the U.S. Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command, the apps make it easy to find local services, manage money and stay up-to-date on the Army Family Action Plan.

The Army OneSource Services Locator for the iPhone or iPad lets you enter a ZIP code or city and search for services grouped by category, including deployment support and employment assistance. The app displays results in both a list and map view with simple driving directions to each location.

In addition, Army OneSource Money Matters provides mobile financial tools and information. It is designed to motivate, educate and support Army soldiers and their families to save and plan for the future. The program includes resources on reducing debt, a savings calculator and a budget tool for tracking monthly expenses.

Lastly, the Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) Issue Search app keeps service members in the loop on AFAP issues impacting the community. You can view the status and resolution of issues from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The app also features search tools and contact information for questions and concerns.

Cool App-titude: iTunes U

Imagine taking Ivy League courses without stepping foot inside a classroom or paying a dime. Thanks to the iTunes U app, you can access thousands of free classes from universities and schools around the globe right on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

The free iTunes U app provides complete classes created and taught by leading instructors from institutions in 26 countries, including Stanford, Yale and MIT. The courses cover thousands of subjects from algebra to zoology, and app users have access to more than 500,000 free resources.

The app lets you see assignments and updates from teachers; check off completed projects; take notes and highlight text in iBooks; and access audio, video, documents, presentations and more.

Cool App-titude: Co-occurring Conditions Toolkit (CCT)

The Co-occurring Conditions Toolkit app for Android and iPhone serves as a quick reference for primary care providers working with patients experiencing a mild traumatic brain injury along with other co-occurring conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, chronic pain and substance abuse.

Developed by the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2), the mobile app includes clinical practice guidelines and recommendations from the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. It gives health care professionals immediate access to critical information, which ultimately improves the quality of care for service members and veterans. The program includes treatment recommendations, enhanced provider-patient interactions and specialty referrals.

The app is free and available for download from the iTunes App Store and the Android Market.

Cool App-titude: Layar Reality Browser

Get a new perspective on the world with the Layar app for iPhone and Android that displays real-time information over top of the image on your phone’s camera.

The free app uses your GPS location and augmented reality technology to discover information about the world around you and present it in “layers” on your smartphone. Choose from a catalog of more than 3,000 layers and experience the world in a new way.

For example, if you’re traveling to a country on business and looking for a restaurant, open the “Eat” layer and point the phone camera at the street in front of you. Various restaurant names and locations will pop up over the image. You can even see reviews in another layer.

The free program lets you search for nearby businesses, and it includes quick links to find nearby bars, restaurants, gas stations and more. Browse reviews and find the best spots in your city. In addition, the app includes deals offered by local businesses.

Use the program to enhance your knowledge of the neighborhood surrounding your next event. Get a sneak peak at San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter before the AFCEA/U.S. Naval Institute West conference this month.

Cool App-titude: Dijit Universal Remote

Clear away the coffee table clutter. The Dijit Universal Remote app transforms your iPhone, iPad or Android into a one-stop control for all the different media players and sound systems in your home.

The program, developed by Dijit Media Incorporated, works together with Griffin Technology’s Beacon, which acts as a bridge between your entertainment system and your smartphone or tablet. The Beacon is sold separately for iOS and Android, and it costs $69.99. Then the free Dijit app works to control the system and create your universal remote.

Once installed, the app provides a customizable interface. Select which buttons should appear; group commands to control multiple systems with the one click; and create a unique guide using only the shows or channels you want to watch.

Is your New Year’s resolution to get your finances in order? If so, the Bills app for the iPhone or iPad could help you track and control how much you spend each month.

The Bills app, developed by iBear LLC, allows you to set a monthly budget and mark due dates for bills and payments on a calendar. Then track and filter your bills using special boxes to show planned, overdue and paid expenses.

The app is designed to look like a real office, complete with a projector, folders, drawers and a flip board reflecting all the features. In addition, the tool lets you export your financial plans and set up a PIN code to protect your information.
