AFCEA Presents:

Insider Threat to Small and Medium Businesses

Thursday afternoon, June 5, 2014

AFCEA's recent Insider Threat conference was timely and truly relevant. The impact of the malicious insider to our national security is now known to all - but this conference helped illuminate what we as leaders can do about it.    ... Michael Madon, Red Owl

Presentations:

Cyber Threats & Vulnerabilities to Small & Mid-Sized Companies (Wright)

What to Know about the Insider Threat and How to Mitigate it (Theis)

Best Practices:  Holistic Approach to Insider Threats (Roberts) and

Counterintelligence and Supply Chain (Thomas)

Cyber Threats & Vulnerabilities to Small & Mid-Sized Companies

One of the biggest myths is that "I'm too small for cyber attackers to care about me."  This common misperception leads to tremendous vulnerabilities as companies do not understand implications for their intellectual property and/or their link to others as part of the larger supply chain.  Mr. Bill Wright will brief on Symantec's recently released 2014 report on cyber attacks, including the devastating facts on attacks on small- and medium-sized businesses.

What to Know about the Insider Threat and How to Mitigate it

Mr. Michael Theis, from the CERT Insider Threat Center at Carnegie Mellon University, will discuss the Center's current research aimed at establishing best practices to mitigate insider threats, including techniques for identifying insider threats and strategies for building a robust insider threat program.

Best Practices on Insider Threats & Supply Chain Security

Given the facts on these threats, this panel will discuss best practices from the perspective of both a medium-sized company, and from a large corporation that depends on small- and medium-sized companies in its supply chain.  Ms. Terry Roberts, Vice President for Cyber Engineering and Analysis from TASC, will talk about how they, as a medium-sized company, developed their insider threat program.  Mr. Doug Thomas, Head of Corporate Counterintelligence from Lockheed Martin, will talk about their award winning program and the need for companies to undertake appropriate insider threat policies to protect their entire supply chain.

Resources to Help Get Started

Several organizations have developed resources and materials to help small and medium businesses address these threats.  The final session will focus on some of the free resources available to secure your firm.
