The term Cloud Computing refers to a set of ICT
services accessible on-demand and in self-service
mode through Internet technologies, based on
shared resources, characterised by flexibility of
use and the precise measurability of performance
levels, so that they can be paid for according to
consumption.
A recent document of our institutions has defined
the treatment of PA data as Strategic, Critical
and Ordinary, and the types of Cloud Computing as
Public Cloud, Private Cloud, Hybrid Cloud and
Multi Cloud.
With regard to Defence, it is clear that we must
speak of Strategic Data and Private Cloud, and
that the latter is the only one possible for
Italian Defence.
But what is the Private Cloud?
The Private Cloud consists of a Cloud environment
reserved for a Customer infrastructure and for its
exclusive use. It can be of the "on -premises"
type or based on an infrastructure that is
entirely within the domain of the user, who
retains control and full responsibility for the
maintenance and security of the data and services
hosted and allocated at its facilities. While on
the one hand these solutions allow for almost
maximum security, on the other hand they have the
disadvantage of not being able to guarantee
adequate scalability to handle unexpected peaks in
demand.
The Afcea seminar will attempt to outline a
possible approach to take advantage of the speed,
low latency and data storage capacity that a
dedicated cloud could provide to Italian defence
in total security by designwith speakers from
military, institutional e industry entities.
