LGS Innovations, Herndon, Virginia, has been awarded a contract to develop a prototype pair of lightweight, low-power optical communication terminals that will allow for light-based communication between micro-satellites in low-earth orbit. Under the terms of the contract, LGS will be responsible for developing a pair of laser communication terminals to be launched on two Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) small satellites. The terminals are to be extremely lightweight, weighing less than 2 pounds each, and will operate on less than 3 watts of power.

LGS Innovations, Herndon, Virginia, recently announced it has been awarded an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract with a ceiling of $9.5 million to supply submarine telecommunication cables to the U.S. Navy’s Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC). Work is expected to conclude by July 2016. LGS Innovations has subcontracted Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) to design, manufacture and supply approximately 650 miles of subsea cable, with an expected operational lifetime of at least 20 years.

LGS Innovations, an independent subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent, Herndon, Virginia, has appointed Kevin Kelly chief executive officer.
