Big data is prevalent across the federal government, particularly the policy-shaping power of new data streams and better constituent information. Two years ago, President Barack Obama signed into law the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act) that prioritized making public government data in an effort to bring transparency to federal processes and harness the collective power of information. The law gives the public  access to data about the nation’s populations, regions, services, economic opportunities and more that can be used by everyone—from local governments and citizens to private business and state agencies.

Global geographic information systems (GIS) company Esri has made What3words available across its ArcGIS platform as a locator, offering a simplified addressing system for computers and mobile devices. What3words marks locations using three easy-to-remember words.

A tiny London-based firm has a way with words, particularly when they are arranged in groups of three. It has parsed the planet into 3-meter-by-3-meter (about 10-foot-by-10-foot) squares in a global addressing system, applying an algorithmic engine to assign three-word identifiers to each and every one of the 57 trillion squares that compose a global map.

NAVGeo LLC, Dayton, Ohio, is being awarded a maximum amount $30,000,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity architect-engineering contract for geographic information systems, professional surveying and mapping services for work predominantly in the eastern continental United States, worldwide. No task orders are being issued at this time. Work will be performed at various Navy and Marine Corps facilities and other government facilities predominantly in the eastern United States but also worldwide. The term of the contract is not to exceed 60 months with an expected completion date of April 2020.
