Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer
Sandra oversees the knowledge sharing and communications efforts of AFCEA, to include editorial, advertising, production, marketing and communications. Prior to this position, she was the executive director of communications and employee engagement at ManTech and served as the editor of its employee quarterly magazine. She was a journalist for more than two decades, including with SIGNAL Media as its executive editor, and extensively covered the U.S. military, both from within the United States and for nearly a decade overseas. She served as a war correspondent, covering multiple military combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and Bosnia and Herzegovina for the editorially independent daily newspaper Stars and Stripes.She graduated from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, with a degree in communications, emphasis in journalism, and holds numerous awards from the Virginia Press Association.

Robert K. Ackerman
Editor in Chief
Senior Director, SIGNAL Media
Robert K. Ackerman has been the editor in chief of SIGNAL Magazine for more than 20 years. A seasoned technology journalist, Ackerman also has served as a war correspondent covering the Iraq War embedded with the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.
A journalist by training, Ackerman also minored in political science in university. His journalism career dates back more than four decades, beginning with stints as a radio reporter covering the Republican and Democratic parties’ political conventions during the 1976 elections. Following those conventions, he served as a media advisor or a press secretary for candidates in state and presidential campaigns.
Most of his journalism work over the years has been in print journalism. His writings have covered a range of issues involving technology, politics and international security. His areas of coverage have spanned topics such as military information systems, foreign affairs, intelligence, laboratory research and development, space technologies, international security, terrorism, cybersecurity and information operations.
Prior to becoming SIGNAL’s editor in chief, Ackerman served as the magazine’s senior editor. He has been with SIGNAL Magazine for more than three decades, during which he has written hundreds of feature articles and authored more than 400 columns and commentaries. He has been a panel moderator or keynote speaker at conferences in the United States, Germany and Russia, and he has appeared as a subject matter expert on television in the United States, France and Russia. Ackerman has won or shared in journalism awards from the Aviation Writers Association; the American Copy Editors Society; Apex; PRSA; the Society for Technical Communication; and the American Society of Association Executives.

George I. Seffers
Director, Content Development and Executive Editor
Before joining SIGNAL Magazine as technology editor in June 2010, George I. Seffers was a media relations representative with Northrop Grumman and an internal communications specialist with Raytheon Technical Services Company. He has also been a reporter for Defense News and Federal Computer Week, where he covered a broad range of military and intelligence communications and electronics topics. As SIGNAL's executive editor, he covers the full spectrum of technology issues.
Kimberly Underwood joined SIGNAL Magazine in August of 2017. She brings with her more than 15 years experience as a reporter, writer and analyst, mostly within the energy industry—both the electric utility sector and natural gas industry.
At SIGNAL, Underwood has turned her attention to emerging communication technologies, cyberwarfare, the intelligence community, military command operations and weaponry research, among other topics, for feature print and online articles. She is also the point of contact for the monthly ProductQuest print column, and she reviews industry contract award announcements for online publication.
Underwood earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economic Theory from The American University in Washington, D.C
Director of Editorial Production
As SIGNAL Media’s director of editorial production, Cyndy Hogan’s responsibilities include production and editing of all SIGNAL Media content for the Web and print magazine, as well as other association communications. Hogan has a long background of working in association publications. She spent more than 12 years at the National League of Cities, serving as managing editor of its weekly newspaper and managing other print and online communications for the association. She also served as publications coordinator for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and began her career as a reporter for The News & Advance, the daily newspaper in Lynchburg, Virginia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from James Madison University.

Megan Lee is SIGNAL Magazine’s Associate Editor for print and online content. Before joining SIGNAL, Lee was a freelance editor and copywriter for professional editing services, publishing houses, and private clients. She also worked for thirteen years as a high school English teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in music and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from George Mason University.

Social Media Manager
Rachel Lilly handles social media management, including development and implementation of strategy. Before joining AFCEA International, Lilly worked as a news producer for the NBC and FOX affiliates in Roanoke and as a reporter for Examiner.com and Bisnow Media. She graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in Communication, specializing in electronic and print journalism, and a minor in English. She has an M.A. in Communication from Johns Hopkins University with a dual concentration in digital journalism and public/media relations.

Chris D'Elia has been the art director of SIGNAL for more than 15 years. During this time, he has been responsible for the look and feel of SIGNAL as well as the cover designs for most issues. He lays out each issue and also helps the association with special projects and ads. He also helps small business advertisers promote themselves by helping them with advertising design.

Director of Media Sales, Strategy and BrandLink
Madeleine manages the AFCEA BrandLink relationships as well as development of SIGNAL media and overall advertising strategies and programs. Prior to her role with AFCEA, she served as the director of marketing, membership & trade shows at the Railway Engineering Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA).
Stern has an extensive background in association communications, with a specialization in marketing and brand management. She has worked on a variety of projects including, clients in travel/transportation, hospitality and insurance industries. Stern served as parliamentarian on the board of directors of the League of Railway Women (LRW).
She holds a B.A. in communications with a concentration in journalism and a double minor in electronic journalism and theater from George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, Virginia.
Manager, Advertising, Marketing and Publications
Bodil Lund is SIGNAL's advertising manager. Prior to arriving at AFCEA, she had 17 years professional office management and event planning experience. She also worked in the travel industry for 19 years; the last six of those running her own travel agency. She is a goldsmith and jewelry designer, and her creative spirit can be seen in her work as the project lead for SIGNAL Kids, AFCEA's STEM publication geared toward elementary school students. She earned a B.A. degree in psychology and fine arts from George Washington University.
