The generals who lead the U.S. Army's cyber force are responding to a diminishing budget believe that changes to its architecture already under way will not only save money but also greatly increase military cybersecurity. Among the first advances are the introduction of servicewide enterprise email-a move that will save the service an estimated $500 million-and the introduction of secure computer tablets that accept CACs and allows individuals access to the data they need. AFCEA staff frequently participate in community and troop support activities, and in one such event AFCEA provided cards, postage, small gift and prepaid postcards--and a pizza lunch, during which AFCEA staff members hand wrote more than 100 "Get Well Soon" and "Thank You" cards to wounded warriors and the medical personnel who care for them. The prepaid postcard was self addressed to AFCEA so that the warfighters, nurses or doctors could write back if they wanted to.
The 2011 AFCEA Education Summit, cosponsored by ManTech International and ManTech University, will present educational issues and best practices to benefit AFCEA Chapters. The Summit is held in conjunction with AFCEA's Joint Warfighting Conference on Monday, 9 May in Virginia Beach. It will be broadcast live via streaming video with live chat, enabling online users to listen and join in the discussions. Last year's Summit featured presentations on Adopt-A-School programs, Ways to Engage with the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), and IRS Rules & Regulations for 501(c)(3) status.
As you have likely heard, severe and unprecedented flooding in Nashville, Tennessee forced the cancellation of the 2010 DISA Customer Partnership Conference. For attendees, exhibitors, and AFCEA staffers, the experience was a difficult one-being evacuated from the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, where the event was to take place; spending the night in a local high school shelter; being separated from friends and colleagues; scrambling to arrange return travel; and a general feeling of panic at the rapidly-changing situation in which they found themselves. While everyone is disappointed that this highly-anticipated annual Conference had to be canceled, they are also grateful first and foremost that everyone is safe.

Educational Foundation Launches BIG IDEA to Support STEM Teachers
AFCEA International and the AFCEA Educational Foundation have an integrated plan to deliver on the recruitment, retention and renewal of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teachers. (See Rita Boland's recent post on the need for these teachers here.)
AFCEA will focus on those preparing to become classroom STEM teachers, offering scholarships, and supplying AFCEA STEM teachers with powerful AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grants (STTools) for use in their classrooms and activities.
The AFCEA Education Summit will take place on Monday, May 10, 2010, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. at the 2010 Joint Warfighting Conference, taking place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The summit will feature discussions on educational issues and best practices to benefit AFCEA Chapters, and will be broadcast over the internet for those not attending. No, I'm not talking about the classic Marilyn Monroe film; I'm talking about AFCEA's Homeland Security Conference, going on this Wednesday and Thursday. The theme is "DHS: The 7-Year Itch-Renewing the Commitment." The event will cover such topics as cybersecurity, securing social media, transparency, identity management, information and intelligence sharing, and more. Speakers include Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and W. Ralph Basham.

AFCEA's Small Business Committee is hosting "Federal Legislative Overview" as part of its Small Business Toolkit Series. The guest speaker for the event is Gregory Willis, counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. AFCEA's Intelligence Department has launched yet another blog. This one focuses on how technology can (or should) be used by intelligence professionals. Bob Gourley serves as the man behind the mask--er, blog. He's the founder and CTO of Crucial Point LLC, a technology research and advisory firm, and he is also the primary blogger at CTOvision.com. If that's not enough, Gourley is a former CTO of the Defense Intelligence Agency and a former senior executive with Northrop Grumman.
MAZZ-INT is the brainchild of Joe Mazzafro, who works in Oracle's National Security Group. He has more than 30 years of experience in the intelligence community and also served in the U.S. Navy as a naval intelligence officer. His blog has been around for a couple of years, and great discussions develop between Mazzafro and commenters.
AFCEA Intelligence and the Naval Intelligence Professionals/Naval Intelligence Foundation (NIP/NIF) have joined forces to sponsor two writing contests. The contests provide intelligence professionals with opportunities to express themselves on topics of importance to the Intelligence Community and national security.

AFCEANs know that while they belong to an international organization, the significant influence they can have on the world often takes place at the local level. But because AFCEA International’s reach is global, the headquarters staff considers the world its local community. Less than 70 people call the headquarters (HQ) building in Fairfax, Virginia, their home away from home five days a week, but these individuals have been involved in a variety of volunteer projects over the years that have made the global village just a little bit better and feel a little smaller.
During the past several months, AFCEA International has been boosting the value of membership with programs such as the Corporate Member Only Forum, the Mentoring Continuum and the CERT STEPfwd training package. Simultaneously, AFCEA Membership Committee members have been discussing how to increase membership among underrepresented groups to enhance all members’ networking opportunities during AFCEA and AFCEA chapter activities. These groups include active-duty military and government personnel as well as Young AFCEANs–those members age 40 and under.
On October 7, AFCEA will launch the first Cycle for STEM fundraising ride. A team of 20 cyclists will leave Pittsburgh on a 335-mile, six-day ride to Washington, D.C., to raise funds for AFCEA science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational programs. On Saturday, October 12, 30 more cyclists will join the team that launched from Pittsburgh for the last day of the ride.
Current and potential AFCEA International corporate members can now take advantage of new pricing for three-year corporate memberships. Companies that join or renew at the three-year level receive the third year free. This offer saves organizations hundreds and even thousands of dollars yet still provides complete membership benefits.

Beginning this fall, AFCEA International will offer a professional-to-professional mentorship program titled The Mentoring Continuum.
