The three-year old Cyber Resiliency Office for Weapons Systems, known as CROWS, created by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2016, has set about making cyber resiliency a part of the U.S. Air Force. As a problem solver for the service, the organization is elevating the cybersecurity of weapons systems, improving the Air Force’s training in cyber and adding cyber resiliency components where uniquely needed, Joseph Bradley, SES, director of CROWS, told SIGNAL Magazine in an interview. Bradley also serves as the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center-Hanscom’s Engineering and Technical Management associate director.

The U.S. Air Force and its innovation arm, AFWERX, have funded an application-based simulator of aviation radio communications through a $1 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research award. The tool, called PlaneEnglish, offers a training environment for pilots to learn aviation speak and radio telephony flight procedures by simulating communications between the pilot and air traffic control.

Huntington Ingalls Industries secured a General Services Administration One Acquisition Solution for Integrated Services, or OASIS, task order to provide Persistent Multi-Role Operations support to the U.S. Air Force-Europe (USAFE) by the Federal Systems Integration and Management Center. The task order will provide contractor owned-contractor operated manned and unmanned airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) in support of Air Force requirements in the European and African theaters of operation. The task order has a base period of one year with four option years and a potential value of $954 million.

The U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center is harnessing advanced satellite communication technology from the private sector through the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) 11+ platform and its Pathfinder effort. The WGS-11+ effort is centered on capabilities that will provide more coverage beams, beam-formed bandwidth and frequency re-use than existing legacy systems, according to a release from the center known as SMC, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base.

Last year, the Air Force announced it was moving the 24th Air Force, which specializes in cyber operations, and the service’s Cyber Mission from the Air Force Space Command to the Air Combat Command. This spring, the Air Combat Command is working on the merger of those cyber components with its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities from the 25th Air Force and integrating cyber into its operations.
The move, which started eight months ago, signifies a shift in the Air Force’s emphasis on putting cyber into everyday operations, said Col. Chad Raduege, USAF, who has been nominated for appointment to brigadier general, director of cyberspace and information dominance, Air Combat Command (ACC).

ViaSat Inc., Carlsbad, California, has been awarded a $93,000,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to provide AN/PRC-161 Handheld Link 16 radios, ancillaries and associated training to special warfare operators. Work will be performed at Carlsbad, California, and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2023. The contract is awarded on a non-competitive basis. The U.S. military is aggressively pursuing the ability to function in any domain, across the realms of sea, land, air, space and cyber, with Joint all-domain command and control enabling decision-making and operations.
For part of the Air Force’s contribution, the service will look to its Shadow Operations Center at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, as the place where it will validate the tactics needed for multidomain operations, including Joint all-domain command and control, Air Force leaders explained at recent AFCEA International events.
On December 1, the service connected key sensors to the center, activating initial existing capabilities, leaders announced recently.
